Nuclear Throne
Suggestions for thronebutt.com (daily run leaderboard viewer)
Hi,

First of all, sorry if this is considered spam. If mods think this is a spam post, I won't mind if they remove it.

A few hours ago I've pushed an update (well, three updates, thanks to my hubris) to http://thronebutt.com, a website which lists scores from daily runs, and also has an all-time leaderboard system - if you visit the website, you can look up yourself via search or by logging in via Steam and then clicking on "My Profile" under your username (the only data collected by me during your login is a link to your Steam profile). The site was built by me, but I've recruited Ledraps recently to help out with booting the hackers out of the boards until a proper anti-cheat in the actual game is implemented.

I'm aware that the devs are planning to roll out their own leaderboards, however as far as everyone else knows, they're going to be in-game only. Even with them, I'd like to expand on that - I've always been a sucker for stats. I'd like to hear out your input and suggestions on the future of the site: what would you like to see on it, what things should be changed and what things should it not be?

Here are a few things I already have in mind:
  • View player's character and the level they reached. It will be added as soon as the devs add support for that in the game (at least they said they would)
  • A way to see how you stack up against your Steam friends who also play the game.
  • More customization - once you reach a specific score or rank, you'd be able to change your name color or add a custom badge or something silly like that.
  • A way to link your YouTube/Twitch channel to the site and have it show videos of you doing daily runs or playing Nuclear Throne in general.

I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

Oh, and here are some stats on the actual site itself[puu.sh]. The site gets around 4000 hits monthly, which is a pretty solid amount - thank you all for visiting it and keeping it alive!

I often record my dailies, so it'll be cool if we could link a video to our own name on the scoreboard. A little video clip would pop up once submitted, and that link takes you to the youtube/twitch video.

I think that's a good way to link a YouTube/Twitch channel.
Anyways, just saying that your site is really great, and if you ask me, all that jazz about "Top %" is completely unesescarry. Of course, that is only my opinion.

Newest features of Average Score and Entries are really neat! Only thing left is Crowns showing on the people's profiles.

Currently take up 6.71 GB of NT footage. lol
First of all, you and Ledraps are doing YV's work here, kudos. The most obvious thing I can think of is a sort by average rank since that's on the player stats screen like average score.

Perhaps players could also manually mark in their own character/weapons per run on their page so they can show the world their sick nuke launcher/ultra laser pistol runs or whatever tickles their fancy.

Then there's the can of worms about trying to weight ratings to make more recent runs worth more so that people working their way up might be more motivated but that's a lot of trouble anyway and we're not even feature complete.

Yeah, profiles will be reworked soon (I need to make the entire site look prettier anyway, the profile page is a discombobulated mess). The Top % thing was suggested by JW, and some people find it cool, so I'll keep it. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Sorting by average rank sounds cool. I'll definitely add some way to at least manually input data about a run and make it look more interesting.

Weighted rankings are definitely an interesting idea, but I'd not like to be in a situation where I can influence how worthy one's run is based on arbitrary factors - especially since I'm not the developer of the actual game. Adding a leaderboard which is based on the average of one's top 10 best runs would be the best way of solving this for now in my opinion: it would make it so that you won't get screwed over if you have a few crappy runs, but you also need to work harder if you want to improve your average score. I'll of course revise this as the game progresses. Thanks a lot :)

I actually havent done ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ since he gave me mod-ship, no one's been doing any cheating (or maybe all of those who were are hacking are already marked as hackers + hidden) So no praise for me, other than not abusing mod-ship

I would disagree. While I will agree that chances are that most of the community/players will not care much there will be a portion who do. The key is that the portion who care will go to great lengths, as they do in the challenges, to make progress within and outside of the game. Why does this matter? Because it is the competitive portion of the community. Look at other games; Magic: The Gathering, CS:GO, World of Warcraft. All those games have players who are casual for the most part, but they have a small portion who are highly competitive. It is the competitive portion who promote the game, give people goals to achieve, create events, inspire the good to become better. The point being that while the majority of us will never make much use of the boards as they are intended they are still of great value to the community and the life of the game as a whole.
