On the matter of fun, have been recently playing as squad of fishes with 1 shared healthpoint on a config similar to the standard "hard" preset. Lots of laughing over how suicidal the situation is.
Also just uploaded v1029 - this has the mentioned fix for unstable connections and default gamepad controls now make use of "face" buttons (all can be edited in controls.ini anyway).
Little gameplay video from this morning. I have more on my other laptop where I don't die for half the game, maybe I'll upload them later.
Meanwhile, more intriguing possibilities:

There are legal ways to handle that (usually by having mod\tools get art\audio\etc right out of the game files) but that's even more work.
So, to summarize, no idea if\when that'll happen if anything.
However, starting today, there'll also be an alternative to that:
Picking it will connect you to the experimental "matchmaker" server.
It allows to host\join public and private games, displays the public game list, and handles UDP hole-punching (meaning that you won't have to open ports for playing this way unless you have a particularly weird networking device).
Feedback is welcome.
Sorry for forgetting to respond - if it's not a bother, videos are always welcome - both for often being interesting to watch and for providing context if any bugs are spotted.
edit:
I tried it with Hamachi but also tried it by connecting to myself through 127.0.0.1. Here's the result. http://i.imgur.com/xol4jwW.png Let me know if that helps you at all.
Basically quite a bit of code was only working due to a bug in a specific software version, and I didn't know about that. Then I've updated to a version that had the bug fixed and now there are "type mismatch" errors all over the place.
