Nuclear Throne
Wasteland Kings Together (an online multiplayer mod)
Link: http://yellowafterlife.itch.io/wasteland-kings-together
Available for Windows and Linux.

I have made a mod for Wasteland Kings (the jam version of Nuclear Throne) that adds local and online multiplayer for up to 4 players.
There are some other changes and additions too:
  • Improves movement and collisions to be on par with those of NT.
  • Fixes crashes originally present in the jam version of the game.
  • Adds a settings screen, for those looking for a bit of a challenge.
  • Adds game options (volume, fullscreen, screen scale, controls).
  • Adds highly tweakable customizeable controls (see readme).
  • Adds Linux support (originally not present in the jam version).

Online multiplayer comes in multiple flavours:
  • Ad-hoc: Standard issue - find your IP, open a port, have your friend(s) connect to you.
  • Matchmaking: A little dedicated server hosts a public game list and can save you from having to open ports. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it's nice.
  • Steam-based: If you own Nuclear Throne on Steam, you can download the "Steam" version of the mod, which uses Steam's systems to implement networking, matchmaking, and invitations, just as you would see in a pretty decent game on Steam.

Feedback is welcome

By trying this out the first time playing online with Villy, i am bumping this and take part of the disscussion.

1. Would love to see that actually.
2. Al long as it is able to be turned off, sure go for it. :P

it's already there y'know
Indeed, difficulty options are around since 1026 and ammo\health sharing is around since 1028.

On the matter of fun, have been recently playing as squad of fishes with 1 shared healthpoint on a config similar to the standard "hard" preset. Lots of laughing over how suicidal the situation is.

Also just uploaded v1029 - this has the mentioned fix for unstable connections and default gamepad controls now make use of "face" buttons (all can be edited in controls.ini anyway).

Little gameplay video from this morning. I have more on my other laptop where I don't die for half the game, maybe I'll upload them later.

That wouldn't be legal the way it currently works (standalone mod), see Rami's post on the last page.
There are legal ways to handle that (usually by having mod\tools get art\audio\etc right out of the game files) but that's even more work.
So, to summarize, no idea if\when that'll happen if anything.
What's the difficulty of hosting a server? I've port forwarded before, but it's always on an easy format like minecraft or terraria which has server-starting programs, but i've never figured out how to port forward on games like source.

Pretty standard stuff here - when you host a game, you pick a port. You open that port on your networking device, and allow the game through Windows Firewall (usually a confirmation popup should appear over the game after hitting "host" for the first time).
However, starting today, there'll also be an alternative to that:

Introducing matchmaker
I've just uploaded v1030, which adds a "multiplayer" option to the "play" menu.
Picking it will connect you to the experimental "matchmaker" server.
It allows to host\join public and private games, displays the public game list, and handles UDP hole-punching (meaning that you won't have to open ports for playing this way unless you have a particularly weird networking device).
Feedback is welcome.
Neat. Also, do you want me to try recording more gameplay footage when I get the chance? I have some old runs stored, but haven't converted them to youtube quality yet.
Btw this looks so much more fun than the current couch co-op!
Uploaded v1031. Updated to the current version of GameMaker: Studio, which should make it run a little faster. Also removed the stray "options.ini" file which could cause random problems with loading settings between game sessions (accidentally introduced in 1030).

Sorry for forgetting to respond - if it's not a bother, videos are always welcome - both for often being interesting to watch and for providing context if any bugs are spotted.
Love this mod, but sadly haven't been able to get it to work. Hypothetically, would it crash if a port is closed? I've opened the port as host but it crashes whenever someone tries to connect to me (on their end). Gonna give hamachi a go now.

edit:
I tried it with Hamachi but also tried it by connecting to myself through 127.0.0.1. Here's the result. http://i.imgur.com/xol4jwW.png Let me know if that helps you at all.

I'll upload a fix for that in the next few days.
Basically quite a bit of code was only working due to a bug in a specific software version, and I didn't know about that. Then I've updated to a version that had the bug fixed and now there are "type mismatch" errors all over the place.
Sounds great! Would love to try it out for you ASAP. Thanks dude. I'll keep tabs on this forum post.
