Styx: Master of Shadows

Styx: Master of Shadows

Game does not launch
Whenever I try to launch the game from the desktop shortcut it opens the little steam window, as all games do, saying it will launch, my steam icon turns green, says I am now playing Styx and two seconds later it turns blue again, nothing happens, the game simply won't launch, no error report, nothing.
I have looked through several discussions trying to find a way to fix this, I have repaired the the required components found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Styx\_CommonRedist\vcredist, 2010 and 2012, same result as before.
I have changed the DefaultGame file to bLaunchSafeMode=true in C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Styx\StyxGame\Config, same result.
I also tried to run both StyxGame.exe found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Styx\Binaries, Win32 and Win64. Despite my Windows version being 64bit I managed to open the game through the 32bit exe, while the 64bit exe gave me the following error "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."
As stated, the 32bit StyxGame.exe does open, and I have played there for a bit, but even after this the desktop result is the same, and if I open it through the Win32 folder Steam does not recognize that I am playing, I can only assume this is no solution for it blocks some content (achievements/cards for instance) and it does not "feel right".

Computer specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits
Intel Core i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHZ
8192MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 Driver date: 13/12/2014

Does anyone know how to solve this problem, launch the game properly through desktop and having it recognized by Steam?
I would greatly appreciate any help.

You're far from being alone with the same problem XD
Tried all of the above, with one difference that the 32 bit version produced just the same "0xc000007b" error. By now I just give up on this... ahem... nice game =)

Weird. Styx is pretty basic Unreal Engine 3 game. Have you had problems with other UE games? Like, Mass Effect, Unreal Tournament, Gears of War, Batman games etc...

That is a shame, really hope there is a way to fix this.
I haven't quite given up myself, as I was and still am excited to play this game.

No. This is the 1st game to cause any problem, I've played some Batman games (Asylum and City) without any problems, I've also recently played Dishonored which I also think to be Unreal Engine 3.

After uninstalling and reinstalling all of the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables TWICE and reinstalling Styx I ran across Microsoft's Dependency Walker or dwalker ( http://www.dependencywalker.com/ ) and using it was able to determine The MSVCR100.DLL Styx was using was the 32 bit version not the 64 bit. I looked in both my System32 and SysWOW64 directories and using dwalker determined both versions were the 32 bit version. Somehow the 64 bit install was deploying the 32 bit DLL so I searched for the 64 bit DLL and downloaded it off of a file hosting site. After testing it and verifying it was the 64 bit DLL I copied it to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Styx\Binaries\Win64 directory and Styx fired up normally. Hope this helps somebody.

Thanks for your advice !
I got the same error with the x64 executable and no problem to run the x64 version.
Finally i execute the binaries : Styx\Binaries\Redist\UE3Redist.exe and now the x64 version works fine :)

Hello, one workaround I have found to play to Styx through Steam is to rename the folders in SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Styx\Binaries :
- Folder "Win64" > "Win64 backup".
- Folder "Win32" > "Win64".

the launching issue is only for 64bits mode. 32bits is working well and the 0xc000007b does not appears.
As the .exe have the same name, Steam will not make the difference and launch the game. Only constraint is not used under 64bits mode but 32bits mode.

Hoping it will be helpful for some players.
