Dis-engage combat
Is there anyway to cleanly do it? Sometimes its better to run away and best yet to not get seen however, it seems once an enemy is close you're locked into combat and I've not been able to break away and hide.

Nope, no way. Its kinda point of the game not to get into combat in the first place. The game would be very easy, if you could run away when caught.
Later in the game you will meet enemies who will kill you immediately when they are within combat distance to you, so its better to learn from the start that "seen and caught to combat=death". Concider the beginning of the game where you still actually can kill the enemies as a easy and forgiving start ^^. I know that first few maps might feel hard and overwhelming, but you will get used to it soon if you keep playing and practicing how to play correctly, I promise!

No not hard at all actually. I just blundered a couple times and wasn't able to run away. Missed drop takedown and caught by suprise during silent takedown. I was merely curious if there was some trick to dis-engage or if I get caught its a manditory fight/death. Sounds like the mechanic is the locked combat though.

In Thief 1-4, Dark Mod, Dishonored, Riddick, Splinter Cell 1- BL, ectera, if caught you were not locked facing your foe. You could run away from your foe or choose to fight if you liked your odds.

Yeah, I know its different in this than in most Stealth games. But what also is different is the number of ways and directions you can escape to, when you are in heat spot. I have played Stealth games since original Metal Gear to NES, and loved Thief series a lot and played Splinter Cell, Hitman (in those 2 you could actually shoot enemies in TPS style very easily if caught...) etc too, but Styx definitely has the most "open" levels when it comes to escape routes. Very 3 dimensional and full of different routes and hiding spots/ways to hide.

But yeah, no tricks to disengage, just have to face the enemy when he is at you. Even with fully leveled melee skills, the enemies can kill you rather easily. If there is 2 enemies or more and one gets to contact with you, its almost always an instant death. And as said, later in the game, even with 1 enemy.

Ive managed to break away a couple times after intentionally engaging and found that sometimes if you roll backwards twice quickly you can sometimes get away and run offbut not a flawless method as it only works sometimes.

Play on Goblin. On goblin, if you are caught you die instantly, with no combat.

Might do that now that I'm familiar with the controls and such.
