Styx: Master of Shadows

Any other Goblin games?
So I just finished Styx, and I loved the game. Loved the atmosphere and the characters, everything. Just curious if anyone knows of any other games that feature a goblin(s) as the main character(s) or the choice to play as a goblin. A lot of games that have goblins in them usually have them as cannon fodder enemies, but I'd really like to play more games as the little monsters.

Well, this game IS a prequel to Of Orcs and Men, and Styx is a playable character in that. Otherwise, I can't think of any other games where you can play as a Goblin, except maybe WoW.

Yeah I've looked at Of Orcs and Men a little bit, didnt look like a gameplay style that I would enjoy as much, but maybe I'll look into it again because of how much I enjoyed this

There is this sorta amazing (and amazingly hard) game called Enclave. There is a good and evil campaign, and you can pick many types of characters/creatures, including a goblin. It's pretty lengthy too. Right here.

The 'Age of Wonders' games have Goblins as an army choice. There's also an old game called 'Gobliiins' that I've never played.

I would have suggested the sequel "shards of darkness" but it's not as challenging or good as this game.
not a horrible game by any means but it disappointed me considering I was hoping for the same quality as the main game.

I highly disagree with you here. I think the second is an improvement in almost way except the story.

1. Yes. The story in the first game is more deep and meaningful, but the second is at least interesting in my opinion and does a good job at driving the focus.
2. Graphics are way better in the second game. The animations are much smoother. Thobin is absolutely incredible of a zone. The akenash dagger actually has polygons this time and isn't merely a 2D plane.
3. There is much more zone variety. In this game pretty much every zone you visit looks so samey. Its mostly just castle areas. Sure there is some variation like in the prison and sewers, but there is far more variation in the second game.
4. I think the second game controls better. In the first game to hold on a ledge you have to first climb in then use space to hold down. its automatic in Styx shards of darkness. There is also many convient things like being able to see score stats in story mode.
5. Some may disagree with this, but I also think styx has more personality in the second game. There is a lot of witty banter from him and while some lines could be a bit immersion breaking yes. Most were great I think.
6. The game has multiplayer. And yes I know multiplayer is a nightmare in some levels and there is some unfixed bugs like the invisibility bug, but its still better then not having any at all.
7. The music I think is great. However its less grim/mischievious/medevil sounding and more adventure fantasy type music. Both are good in their own rights.

My main gripe with both games though is that towards the second half of each game they start recycling assets. A budget issue I assume, but still an issue. Of course it would be better they do this then only give us about 4 levels.

I mean this your opinion and you are entitled to it but it hardly saves the game from being painfully average.

also there is nothing wrong with recycling content. you also have to consider the budget the devs have to work with.

the reason why I don't recommend, nor like shards of darkness is because they only improved the graphics and added coop that nobody in the first game asked for. other than that it has all the trappings of modern games which the prequel proudly abdicated in order to create a focused and brilliant stealth game in an age in which the stealth genre was already on life-support thanks to games like dishonored and thief reboot.

furthermore I'm not a fan of the story. the first one had mystery and it paid off in the end. it had it's own unique concept about fantasy creatures that you barely even come across in the thousands of pages written from "skilled" writers that call themselves high-fantasy authors.

the reason it turned out so disappointing, is the reason why most - if not all - modern games fail. namely with a bigger budget the dev's creativity disappears. limitations always breed creativity and that's something modern game devs barely understand anymore.
hence why you see contemporary games being bloated with meaningless features.

in fact if you look at some of the articles that are published, some of them indicate the death of specific genres in favour of game that has all genres combined. like gta or rdr2.

look don't get me wrong. if you like shards of darkness, then more power to you!

Of course budget is an issue. In the second game they even do a bit of a self own. Styx says"Man the lack of originality in these zones. Its almost as though the developers had make budget cuts." I do think the second game is pretty darn good, but I can understand why many don't like it. In so far as creativity. I'd argue there is more creativity in that one then the first. And even though the story wasn't as good there is a lot good moments within it. But to each their own.
