Yeah, definately - but I still think less cursing would add more appeal to the game. Every time I hear a "f*ck" I roll my eyes. I will continue to use the forum to voice my opinion :)
My argument: Garrett from the Thief series did not need to use lewd language in order to emphasize (at least in the 1st and 2nd game).
Styx looks ugly, acts ugly, and views the world as an ugly place. It's part of what makes his better moments so good.
That Styx would be a different Styx than the one in the first two games though.
It'd be like making Superman kill bad guys or destroy cities in big fights. No one wants to see characters change like that. <snicker>
Kinda offtopic:
I just wonder, if he would kill children or women, since there were non in the first game. I could imagine that he would if he'd really need to kill a woman but I can't with a child. ( I didn't play of orcs & men so if there was something like this I don't know it)
There were female characters in OOAM, all of them fighters (well High Mage Arkence was, obviously, a mage). This is a setting where the most feared and respected order of human warriors and assassins is entirely women* and apparently all orc women are trained to fight; Styx is very practical and apparently understands it's kind of foolish to think you should treat women differently when they're still twice your size, quite competent, and possibly trying to kill you. :P (He does flirt with Brune a bit, but she's already his friend. He does NOT flirt with Fox, despite being on friendly terms with her too, most probably because she's a former Sister of Laments and would kick his little green butt.)
There aren't any kids in OOAM, but Styx and Arkail both apparently don't believe in killing random helpless people that pose no threat to them, since you can't attack cowering non-combatants. (In Master of Shadows he can obviously make exceptions, but that's because it's a stealth game and those unarmed servants will call for guards he can't fight head-on. He'd probably shove a kid into a closet or something to buy some time.)
*And yet the guards/military and the Inqusition apparently don't allow women in the ranks. Which probably explains why there aren't women in Master of Shadows either, since it takes place entirely inside another human military establishment.
It’s not a weakness that you have naturally. When you come out of that pink ugly hole onto this planet, you're nothing but a gooey, shrieking, wrinkled ball of weakness. That’s all you are: you're weak, you're nothing but weak, and your parents looked at that, and they thought, “Not weak enough! We can make this thing even weaker by training it to react poorly to different sounds that you can make with your mouth.”
We'll list them out, this is the worst thing, if anyone ever makes this this sound: [unintelligible gibberish], that’s the worst thing they can say tol you, so make sure to recoil and cry, and be hurt and devastated, and eat ice cream on a couch for days, and then write a blog about it. You wouldn't do that otherwise, you'd just be happy if your parents didn't ♥♥♥♥ it up. You'd just be a happier person." --Doug Stanhope.
Because taking seriously what a stand up comedian says is such a great idea xD
I don't mind cursing. In my opinion in Styx has room for improvement in the voice acting department. Maybe I'm just spoiled due to years of hearing top quality AAA voiceovers in other games/movies.
It's not that it's bad. It's that if done better next time - it will keep you glued to the screen for longer and make you like the character more.
The whole intro scene when Styx meets the guy with the scar on his face, cussing because he has a scar on his face, is pure cringe.
The posters above have failed to see this and are just shotguning replies because they only see it as the OP being too sensitive or something.
All the guards and their dialogue in this game (more women in the sequel please, too much sausage) can be summarized as [talking about how hard their life is] + [insert cuss word to cap off how hard their life is].
Really, the thread should be called 'Better writing in sequel please'
But if you mean that sometimes cussing sounds contrived to make a character appear more badass, then I can agree with that. The only time I felt that happened in Styx was his comment about ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ a lion in its den.
