How tokens work

So I missed only 1 during all 4 stages of 1 level. Do I need to find only this 1 I missed or do I have to collect all 40 again.

IIRC you need to find them all again on the same stage.

Those tokens are diabolical. I always collect 9/10 on every level and then have to go hunting around for the missing last token. So annoying!

You can get upgrade to see them through the walls, but very late in the game. IIRC it's one of the three top-level upgrades.

You finished the stage with 39/40 tokens. If you replay the stage again you would start at 0/40 tokens, if I understand token collecting correctly.
