Having Trouble Launching Game
Hello,

When I try to start Vector Thrust through steam I recieve the "Failed to start game (Unknown Error)" message. I have gone through the process of deleting the appcache folder in Steam without success.

Trying to start the game from outside of steam results in this error:

This application has failed to start becauase its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail".

Google says it may have to do with an incorrect C++ runtime library configurations. I have tried troubleshooting this by uninstalling all installed C++ runtime libraries and reinstalling Vector Thrust (allowing it to install the supplied runtime). So far everything I have tried has failed to change the situtation oncesoever. Any help would be much appriciated!

Thank you.

Can we see the last 20 lines or so of your Ogre.log? You can find it in the game's root directory.

Het,

I do not see a Ogre.log file, only various Ogre____.dll files.
SlyAceZeta Oct 25, 2014 @ 11:06pm
It's not Ogre.log, it's Ogre.txt.

The only text file in the Vector Thrust root right now is the steam_appid.txt file.

If you can't see it, try verifying your game cache, it seems like you are missing some files.

The cache was verified successfully: http://i.imgur.com/HJcplgQ.png

And this is what I see in my VT root folder: http://i.imgur.com/9luRXSN.png

Very weird. Would the lack of the file you are looking for be the result of never getting the game to run at all?

Ok, I'm just going to plug in the standard bug fixing routine.

1: Update your openal32 drivers.
http://support.focus-home.fr/oalinst.exe

If that doesn't fix it, try this.

2. Go to your config.ini files, found here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\VectorThrust\

3. Edit it with Notepad and replace following lines with what is shown below and just change the width (xxxx) and height (yyyy) to your monitor size:

[renderer]
width = xxxx
height = yyyy
FSAA = 0
colourDepth = 32
vsync = true
fullscreen = true

[Display]
GraficQuality = 4
ModelQuality = 4
TextureQuality = 4
WorldQuality = 4
EffectsQuality = 4
EffectsNumber = 3
Bloom = false
Glow = false
Distortion = false
Radial Blur = false

openal32 drivers updated, config.ini changed with above information (with 1920x1080 for screen size).

No change, "This application has failed to start becauase its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." error pops upon game start up.

You are getting that error because you're missing the C++ runtimes necessary to run Vector Thrust. They were supposed to install upon first launch of the game. Since this is the problem you're encountering, I'm going to suggest attempting a reinstall of all of the components, not just the C++ runtimes.

Go to your VectorThrust folder, go into _CommonRedist, and then:
  • In the DirectX folder, in the Jun2010 folder, run DXSETUP.exe.
  • In the OpenAL folder, in the 2.0.7.0 folder, run oalinst.exe.
  • In the vcredist folder, in the 2005 folder, run one of the following:
    • If your computer is 32-bit, run vcredist_x86.exe.
    • If your computer is 64-bit, run vcredist_x64.exe.

Just to be safe, restart your computer after doing these installations and, after the computer starts up again, verify the game's cache one more time. Then try launching it, and it should run.

I followed your steps and ended up with no difference, same error on startup.

First thing first please follow the bug fixes as shown here:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/242130/discussions/0/34095684646795882/

If any of them steps don't solve the problem please follow these steps:

Uninstall Vector Thrust.
Uninstall all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 from your PC.
Restart your PC.

Then once your PC has restarted install Vector Thrust again.
Verify that the game cache is correct.

Now if you have a (x86)32-bit Based PC install the following:

Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86) first:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3387

Then install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) afterwards:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5638

Restart you PC after installing them both. And then try booting up Vector Thrust.
Any problems please state them below.

Now if you have a 64-bit Based PC install both the (x86)32-bit and 64-bit versions:

Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86):
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3387

Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86):
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5638

Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x64):
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21254

Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64):
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18471

Restart you PC after installing them both. And then try booting up Vector Thrust.
Any problems please state them below.

Thanks for the reply midsummersnow,

I went through all the steps that you have provided. I had only one 2005 redistribute installed prior to going through your guide, which I uninstalled (along with uninstalling VT):

I then restarted the PC, redownloaded and installed VT, and verified the files. No effect.

I proceeded then to downloading and installed the 4 files you posted for the 64bit PC, which are pictured here:

I then restarted the PC, ran VT and unfortunately, I am stuck with the same error immediately after game start up:

I thank all of you for the help but it seems as if I will not be able to get this game running either on this PC or on this game version. I look forward to continued development of the game and I'll probably give this a try again in the future.

I'll post my PC specifications in-case anyone else runs into this issue and we find some sort of pattern:

OS: W7 Home Premium
GPU: EVGA GTX 760
CPU: Intel i5-4690K @ 4.2 GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR3

Thanks!

That's really, really strange... I think we've had you do almost everything and it still won't work. My sincerest apologies. :/

Hmm sorry to hear that. Thanks for the feedback though I'll inform TimeS about this. Also do you use a dedicated sound card or a integrated sound chip?
Chickens Oct 27, 2014 @ 12:28pm
Negative, I'm using whatever is built in to my motherboard, a ASRock Z97 Pro 4.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it helps us troubleshooting here, but I found this little snippet from the event viewer with a little bit more detail about the error:

Activation context generation failed for "D:\Steam\SteamApps\common\VectorThrust\VectorThrust.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.6195" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
