Unlocking different trees

Okay, dumb question but how the hell does one unlock additional trees for the challenge mode (and for Skirmish)?

level up ! (at the end of a mission it shows your level) the higher your level the more challenges you can do and the more plane families you unlock (at least thats what i guessed how it works?)

I'm pretty sure more aircraft families are unlocked upon completing more challenges.

The F-104 leads into the F-16. F-16 turns into the A-10, F-35 and F-15, which is where I believe the challenges go up to for now.

The MiG-21 turns into the MiG-29 which will unlock the Su-27 and Su-25 familes in a later patch.

The J-35 family unlocks Jaguar, Mirage F-1 and Lampyridae, I think.

So what are the current families in the game? I finished the f15 challenge, A10, and all but the last 2 of the f16 but there is no F35 branch unlocked.

yeah but with doing challenges you level up on the way, so playing the campaignes helps a lot too (or redo them on higher difficult)
