Did this game install Xvid on my system?
So I noticed the other day that I have the Xvid codec and player installed on my system. It seems to be around the same time I installed this game. Does this game install Xvid or should I start questioning family members why they are screwing with my PC?

I guess it did.
Had the same problem here. Saw a new XviD install and wondered where it came from because I only downloaded 4 games from the new humblebundle that day and this was the only one who did some installing after downloading.
Things like this pisses me off, because you get it installed without warning or notice and you don't have a chance to deselect it.
In my case it had overwritten my Xvid codec I was using and reset my customization of it.
Got lots of error messages after deinstalling the Joe Danger Xvid codec and simply re-installing my old XviD didn't work. I had to de-install my whole codec pack and make a new clean install of it to get it working again.

Yeah I looked at the file modification times and they are near each other so I assume this game did install the Xvid. Hate ninja installing.

I'm not pleased that there was no warning on the store page that indicated that xvid would be installed. The game just isn't good enough to stay installed on my computer if it is going to be a vector for covertly installing unwanted software on my machine.

You're wrong, and this can be verified by looking at the .vdf scripts the game runs upon launching.

It makes perfect sense, if you open InstallScript.vdf you will see
"Run Process"
"xvid"
"HasRunKey" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\xvid"
"process 1" "%INSTALLDIR%\\Redist\\xvid.exe"
In order to Steam do not install this codec and vcredist, Save this file as fix1.reg and add to registry(click 2nd left mouse on file and add to registry)
64bit windows:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Valve\Steam\Apps\242110] "xvid"=dword:00000001 "VC++"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\xvid] "xvid"=dword:00000001

32bit Windows:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\Apps\242110] "xvid"=dword:00000001 "VC++"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\xvid] "xvid"=dword:00000001

Or just delete the xvid exe from the redist folder before starting the game for the 1st time.
Nope this is the best method.

They both work just fine.

What exactly is so bad about this program? Just curious because I might get a refund if it is malware.

If i remember because it has been awhile, it was just some video player with a codec the game needed. Thing is any program that installs extra ♥♥♥♥ I didn't want on my machine pisses me off.
