How
Why is this game the best reviewed game in the platform?
I mean no hate towards this game, but... I'm confused.

That doesn't explain much.
No, wait.
Is it really?
THAT good?

Well, to be completely honest. The last major update comes out REALLY unpolished. This includes tons of bugs, some mini-games don't fit very well, optimization issues, some questionable balance and gameplay decisions. It was released recently and the devs are currently on vacation after fixing most critical bugs, so all that's left to do is wait.

In my opinion it was one of the best games in its genre, even without considering that it is free. But the current state requires a lot of polishing.

oh right it's also a game centered around a popular group/subject, as well as being Free and Pretty Good. but it's totally possible to play without that knowledge, you just won't get the jokes.

It's a game where you can enter without knowing anything about it's source material and still have an entertaining time, while not feeling left out.

For me "HoloCure" is a way better than new "Dragon Age" trash, "Dustborn", "Concord" or other similar slop that was designed only God knows for who and why.

It's a fun, simple game with a cute artstyle that anyone can get into without requiring any knowledge for any of the hololive characters.

You know what your problem is? You're looking at the review score as some sort of ranking or absolute.

A game getting overwhelmingly positive in general means the devs are doing the vast majority of things right, but there's more to it for 99% positive. It says something not just about the developers but also things like genre, advertising, franchise, etc.

What kind of factors bump the game up all the way to 99%?
-Popular genre(both at the time and now)
-Disproportionate amount of vtuber fans
-Massive amount of exposure from vtubers
-Based on the most popular agency
-Free

All these things help a lot. Just don't take the specific numbers too seriously. They don't mean that much. The review description (Overwhelmingly positive, very positive, etc) is much more meaningful.

Its a free Indie game that is very well made, AND is a passion project for the Dev, so they have incentive to get things just right unlike some AAA games these days that try and push an agenda or meet a deadline to release.

Its a game made by a fan for fans, and made to be fun.

1. It doesn't cost anything. That reduces criticism from the get-go.

2. It's quite fun to just play. A good Vampire-Survivorslike is always a fun time, especially with a good balance of mooks and serious threats. The roster is friggin' ginormous, they all have quirks and they all easily mold into a number of basic tropes (melee, sniper etc) The item system features combination and most of them at least seem useful in some circumstances. More content unlocks as you go, including tricky stages, Time Attacks, Hardcore Modes etc.
3. There's a good set of cooldown activities too. When you get too wound up on an action game, then after a few hours... you gotta take it easy for a bit. Idle games, rhythm games, resource sims, casino stuff, even a frustration game help change up the pace.
4. There's a large amount of community involvement. Every character is an actual streamer, complete with audience, and almost all of them have played Holocure at some point to amuse said audience. All the items and skills in the game are in-crowd jokes tied to those streamers' best moments.

The characters vary, from nearly unknown in the US but popular in other countries, to highly recognizable personalities. Usada Pekora (The rabbit character) was recently nominated for Streamer of the Year for the Game Awards. That's... not small. If she wins... you can bet your nuggets there will be a nod to it in the game before long.

5. The game sees a lot of updates, and is getting improved and rebalanced pretty often. In fact it got a new one pretty recently.

Put it simple, there are a lot of reasons. Nice, crunchy pixel art and a good difficulty curve is just the tip of the iceberg

I gave the game a positive rating cause I enjoyed playing the game. Didn't really think anything along the lines of, "THIS IS GOING TO MAKE THIS ONE OF THE TOP RATED GAMES OF ALL TIME!" I heard at one point that it's highly rated and I just thought it's cool that it is.

It's fun, free, and based on the most popular vtuber group. What else do you expect?

It's the best game in the genre, it's free and it has a very dedicated fanbase.
