I work primarily in video games as an animator. Video game productions go on for years and years, so this is my main and most consistent income and I'm able to live reasonably well from that.

I also work as a freelancer for various anime studios every once in a while (around 1-2 gigs a month). This is a small bit of side money that helps. Each gig is like maybe $500 - $1000. It's not much, but it does help cover any development costs.

I'd say ~75% of the development work of this game, I do on my own from gameplay design, most sprites+animation, programming (the entirety of Holo House I coded on my own), and project management. Because my animation jobs pay me enough, I spend my free time working on this game and obviously, I don't need to pay myself. This means I don't spend much extra money to develop this game, just my time. I do pay for all translation work as well as some of the additional art help (like furniture), so there's SOME cost, but not really much. My extra side money I mentioned before definitely covers it.

As long as I can continue living comfortably, have time to work on this game, and people are enjoying the game, that's all that matters to me.

Kay Yu has done official work for Cover/hololive, in addition to their work for anime (most recently Onimai) and video games such as River City Girls.

Personal funds, as they don't get paid for it.
It's a fangame and a passion project, so all the time and money invested are a bit like... you spending money on entertainment, I guess? Except they make a lot of people happy at the same time. Also Kay Yu probably does a lot of things himself on graphics too, very talented.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Your amazing, as someone who has friends in game design and animation, take care of yourself and be safe I've heard horrible things about certain aspects of both.

I cannot tell you how much I respect and appreciate everything you and everyone have done to work on this game. I sincerely look forward to its future and I hope you manage to get your rest when you can.

Genuinely, thank you. This is the first time I've actually enjoyed a game of this genre and I can't seem to not play it when I have free time. (I should be going back to finish BG3 but here I am learning how to grind coins with Risu lmao)

I wish nothing but the best for you! You are so awesome.

I know people have doubts for this amazing free game, but holocure has been in the wild for a year and played by hololive English, Japan and ID throughout the year.

Also from the visuals in-game, you'll find the shrimps and skeletons wearing coat. That's reference from a music video Kay animated for Gawr Gura and Mori Calliope's original song 「Q」. Dude has a long ass portfolio.

Nothing but the deepest respect for the legend that you are for dropping such a gem into this community. I can't imagine how many fans (and talents themselves) adore this game. Even if you don't need it, or feel it necessary in any way, I (and probably many others) would love the chance to send you a donation for this game, if only show my appreciation.

Doesn't really seem sus to me, considering such fan projects were much more common in the early 2000s (like all those Smash Bros fangames for example). Still, thanks for explaining, it's rare to see something of this level of quality these days, let alone one that got this big in terms of content.
