Difference is tho you need to farm and waste money first to get the rods. So every 20 min you Fish without Golden Rod you waste a whole potential Gold Farming run.
Rule of thump would be this:
Early game Fish so you can get some characters and the first cheap upgrades. After that its all out Gold Farm. I did exactly that and already have all characters and some Upgrades.
I assume the main point of Golden Rod is higher chance of golden fish, though by the time I even caught 1 golden fish with Golden Rod (3 with Turkey Rod) I quit Holo Housing because I had Holo House related achievements done and don't need the income but need to grind Gachikois.
