Seems like a solid advice. Iam not far into the game but Iam already disappointed.
However, it is still possible to "brute force" your way through the game by just focusing on high raw damage output. Some fights will be considerably harder though...
Best bet is to just pick 3-4 favourite weapons to upgrade and use them (sharpshooter / hunter bow, maybe a warrior bow, shredder, and a whatever). Frost and Shock arrows/weapons is the most useful, then you might need a plasma and maybe fire for some Apex and Plasma arrows is fun to sue on people, (fire is really nerfed crazy from HZD.)
One exception are the legendary things. (those 5 coil slots yummy).
My recommendation is to think what type of built you want to use next and focus on those.
It is possible however to upgrade every single weapon and armour in the game and change builds while playing which is awesome.
As far as weapons go, I can't say I agree with everyone's "this is absurd" variety take for the weapons. At least not completely. There are a couple of particular weapons which have me scratching my head, like the Seeker Hunter Bow (Purple rarity) which has Advanced Hunter Arrows and then two Frost arrow options instead of Pierce or another element. But 9 times out of 10 the weapons are fine IMO. Though, it does suck they nerfed the hell out of the Ropecaster and Tripcaster. Like ArdaDaMarda said, though: Definitely don't sleep on the Spike Thrower weapon. It's a very good weapon to have and use; especially when you can get your hands on the Vindicator Spike Thrower. By that same token, don't sleep on the Shredder weapon either. Both are very welcome additions in my book.
In Burning Shores the electric bow comes in handy for those flying egg things. That's the only place I've used it. You should have two sets of armor since each armor is always weak to two types of elemental damage. In Burning Shores you must have high electrical resistance for the final boss fight otherwise it's impossible.
