Frame generation with framerate limit?
I know most people use frame generation to improve their framerate. However, the feature can also be used to save power and keep the graphics card cool, requiring it to just render half the amount of frames per second it normally would. With my 4090, getting enough performance usually is not an issue, so I like to reduce and limit the number of frames instead, to a number sufficient to play the game without any issues (60, 85, 90... depends on the game).

However, Horizon Forbidden West automatically turns VSync off when activating frame generation and there's no way to limit the number of frames otherwise. The effect is that my GPU permanently runs at 100% load, draining almost 500 Watts and rendering images that aren't even displayed. The only solution is to turn off frame generation and turn on VSync. But this way, always the full number of images up to the screen refresh rate must be rendered and the system doesn't benefit from the frame generation feature at all.

Does anybody know if there's a way to still limit the FPS with frame generation on? It works perfectly fine with other games like Cyberpunk 2077 + raytracing, Witcher 3 + raytracing etc. I can play at fluent 90 FPS with a relative cool system and only moderate power consumption. Why isn't this possible with Horizon Forbidden West?

Bro, just use Nvidia Control Panel. My monitor is 240hz so ill cap it at 237 per title. Don't set it globally.

Microsoft Store is where you can find it easily.

You can cap frame rates in Afterburners RTSS

You can also set the power limit of your 4090 with Afterburner. The consensus is that you can turn down the power limit to 80% which is where I have mine set, or even lower without losing any significant performance. I checked mine with HWinfo and it shows that the max draw is around 360W. My 4090 runs very cool with a max temp of 60C.

And with a 4090 you should be using DLAA. 4090 doesn't need any help with FPS. You are just making your video quality worse.

You can cap them with RTSS but it'll bring some latency if the cap is too low, like make sure it is 90fps minimun. At least I tried with 72 because my monitor is 75hz freesync and I do that to stay just below the sync range and it didnt feel bad but I could notice my aiming turning heavy than usual, but yes the power consumption and temperatures were lower. Not to say while the game is capped it'll be more stable, if you can keep the real base framerate steady.

Force vsync in the nvidia control panel, don't do it globally just do it on this game's profile. When you have that turned on your computer ignores the application's preference for vsync and just forces it on no matter what.

There might be unintended consequences, like maybe more input lag? But I haven't noticed anything and I do this on every game that forces vsync off for whatever reason.
