Can machines destroy their own removed components?
This hasn't happened a lot but it's happened to me at least twice. The most recent one was while fighting a Dreadwing (on the beach, valley of the fallen).

I highlight the component with focus, target it with a tear arrow, and blow it off. Component seems to have been removed because the purple glow is gone. I used tear arrows and not impact arrows.

Yet after the fight is over, I can't find the components anywhere. Very frustrating.

Loot has a tendency to de-spawn if you don't pick it up fast enough.
It is best to blast the part off, run to pick it immediately and run away (at least that's how I farmed them).

Components can get kicked around during a fight quite a bit. Sometimes I found stuff after a fight, where I wouldnt have expected because I considered it too far away from the place where it fell off. Very large machines appear to deliver stronger kicks.
Since I failed to find some components after some fights, I started to search rather ridiculously large areas with focus 'on' (not just the ping). Im not absolutely certain, but cant remember not having found something since then.
I am quite certain, however, there is a physics glitch that can make things 'fly on the wings of the ten' for, hm, I guess 10+ m at times.

Not convinced about this whole "despawning loot" thing.

Main reasons for it seems to be bigger machines have a tendency to yeet items off the ground. You can often find stuff scattered a little outside the area you were fighting in.
I'm certain I've seen things like Shellwalker Crates actually be destroyed by damage after removing them. I don't know if that can happen to normal components, but it seems not.
I know one Tremortusk on the icy lake can push items through the floor too, the only difference is that the 'floor' still exists beneath the ice, so you can see the markers but have no way to retrieve them. Wouldn't surprise me if that can happen elsewhere, but obviously they have nothing to land on so are lost.
Stormbird Storm Cannons are notorious for straight up disappearing, probably cos of the shock explosion and the bird falling onto the item and launching it away.

This game has a major issue with stuff just falling through the floor. Had it happen quite a lot, so enabled the auto loot thing. Really wished they didnt make the whole change where you need to shoot some things off just to get them...

I've found loot from some fights over 100m away from where I broke it off. There's certainly always a chance a bug could occur, that the item might not be dropped or falls through the floor, but I'd place my bet on the part simply being flung far off into the middle of nowhere.

I'm not sure about loot despawning. I have my doubts about that one. I swept a wide area around the beach because I have definitely found machine parts that got yeeted a SURPRISING distance from the fight before.

Didn't have any luck finding the two fangs I knocked off from that first fight, but I came back around to the same Dreadwing for 2 more bouts and had zero trouble on the next two.

I'm guessing the parts either somehow got yeeted someplace far or weird on the first round or else (and I'm leaning toward this being more likely) I somehow managed to unhighlight the fangs during the first fight and tricked myself into thinking they were already loose when they weren't.

Never had an issue with loot falling through the floor that I know of, but I have had a few cases where **I THOUGHT** that's what happened, but it turned out there was a chest underground with a hidden entrance to access it or something.

There's a certain quest where you have to fight a Thinderjaw and then a Stormbird joins.
Those two on UH can be quite challenging so it took a while and I 100% shot off both birb's canon and Thunderjaw's tail.
The fight takes place in a huge flat valley and I spent 30 min searching for parts - nowhere to be seen.
It could be that quest machines don't drop same parts (at least in main quests they are quite different from regular ones, most notably have a lot less HP).
But the more interesting thing happened when I tried to farm Behemoth's force.. something.
There's a Behemoth convoy of some sorts, but it had 2 apex Ravagers with it, so I used blast arrows to shoot Behemoth's parts off, then smoke bomb and hide until they de-aggro.
When they left I tried to find the parts but they were gone.
So I caught up with the convoy and - what do you know! - Behemoth miraculously grew its parts back :steamhappy:

Agree with the comments on components getting tossed very, very far sometimes. They also can get thrown off a cliff and lie waaaay at the bottom. Use the focus and scan carefully.

But the tip to try and pick up as soon as you see it fly off is also good - you will still retain it even if you die in the fight. At this point I'm farming legendary upgrades so I just get the part I need and run away to conserve ammo lol.

Odd. I know that shell-walkers sometimes pick their cargo back up after you shoot the clamps (saw it only once) but never seen a behemoth do it.

That's just a symptom of them moving out of range and 'regenerating' so to speak. The first time I fought the Slaughterspine on the northern beach of San Fran, for some reason the Stormbird joined the fight. Naturally, the damn thing refused to come close enough to engage it properly even after I'd taken the Slaughterspine down, got as far as shooting off the armour over the cannon before it lost aggro. When I finished looting and caught back up with it, the armour was back in place.

Losing the tail is quite rare, never had one of those vanish from a Thunderjaw. Bird Cannon is a myth. Swear I've had more from the Base loot chest than I have from fighting Stormbirds cos the cannon just gets yeeted off into the unknown the moment you strip it.
