"Brace" when you see the enemy attack icon flashing, so you don't get stumbled by their hits. When possible, shoot arrows/shock bolts/tearblast bolts (as you pick them up on the track) at riders to the side of you and/or in front of you -- for normal arrows you can dismount a rider by shooting them twice; and the same dismounting can be done with shock + melee hit. Else, three melee hits should do it, but usually just one or two by themselves is enough to make riders fall behind you, making a dismount effort more trouble than it's worth in that case. To this end, in any arrow-shooting case, utilize Concentration; makes it so much easier and more reliable.
Don't worry about riders *behind* you; you need to keep your camera at least somewhat on the track.
Also managed to pick up some mount boost items, that really helped out to catch up in the end.
