NVIDIA Drivers 552.22 Silently Exit Game (EDIT: Not anymore)
I just wanted to post this in case anyone else experiences this out of nowhere and isn't sure why.

I updated to NVIDIA drivers 552.22 from 552.12 and had the game silently exit (no obvious crash dialog or anything else) while backgrounded within a few minutes of launch four times. I have over 50 hours of gameplay with 552.12 without a single issue so I reverted to 552.12 and the problem went away.

i9-14900KS, RTX4090, and Windows 11

[EDIT]: Reimaged PC due to BSODs on Intel/Asus i9 crashes that are being regularly reported recently and now 552.22 works just fine.

I installed 552.22 Friday night. I probably have close to 10 hours on it, and I have not had a sudden exit, but I only have a slow 3080 on an equally slow 12900k.

I had this issue for a brief while before Patch 1.3.55.0 but after the patch it was gone. Now it's happening again as of today. For me it's only on the Burning Shores. Where are you in the game?

I'm not yet in or started Burning Shores. I'm currently on the main quest "Faro's Tomb".

I refuse to update my driver when its not necessary, like for a gameready-driver. But I am also on an old card (2070) so the the benefits of an update are 99% of the time is zero. In my experience nvidia drivers have always been garbage prone to break just as much as they "fix"

I have a 4090 also and have been on 522.22 drives since they released and the game has been smooth sailing since, no crashes - that's been at least 30-40 hours of gameplay since with no crashing or other hiccups. I have an AMD CPU however and I just heard there were some issues with latest gen Intel processors, so might want to look into that. *shrugs*

Given that the issue was solely related to an NVIDIA driver update and immediately disappeared when rolling back the driver, I don't think it's my CPU.

could be your 4090

Could be my haircut too. Given how correlated it was with the driver update though, the most likely culprit right now is the driver. Time will tell.

Programming is a fickle thing OP. A fix might help one group of players while it might cause issues for another - just too many PC configurations hardware and software wise. I sure you already know that. My only suggestion is to disable all overlay programs even Steams overlay and run the game in exclusive fullscreen to see if that makes a difference. Best to ya.

Unless you are going to play Manor Lords or No Rest For The Wicked then there is simply no need to upgrade to 552.22

Just stick to 552.12 which work just fine

wasn't 552.12 made specifically for Horizon Forbidden West?

It looks like it may actually be a hardware issue. I'm caught up in this whole Asus basically letting CPUs do infinite (4,095W power draw) by default, which is over 10x Intel's spec. Not to mention default current draw is also 50% above extreme profile spec too. Next question is, did it damage the CPU before I found out about it?

Why in the world would any mobo vendor DEFAULT to unlimited current and power specs? :/

Because it will increase performance given a decent water cooling and it probably made it possible for Intel to stay more or less on par with AMD in benchmarks :). Your CPU will go nowhere near to th 4096 W, though. Only 350 W or so instead of 253W or so... . The theory is now that this accelerates degradation significantly.

What develops from this remains to be seen.

when you use "gameready" drivers that is just a fancy name for Beta drivers, this is behaviours is expected.
Why even update drivers at all unless the old driver is actually having problems with some features in a game?
If you absolutely have to have the latest drivers use the Studio drivers. Those are Tested and verified stable.
