I'm about to give up on this game, need help.
I played the original game and loved it, but this game has me about to throw in the towel.
The jump-climbing action is incomprehensible to me.

I'm climbing the tower to the shuttle, I'm at the point where you are standing on the broken-off end of a stairway and the point where you need to jump to is right in front of you. Up to this point it all worked as I would expect. Find the target and jump toward it.

When I use the V key it gives you the dialogue about holding your weight and being able to grapple it, so I activate the grapple, "Equip the bow plus E".

I've tried firing the grapple dozens of times, it doesn't grab anything even though it's right in front of me, the indicator does not indicate that it sees anything but if I try and jump the second I hit the jump button, the "space bar" the grapple disappears and the bow returns.

If I try and jump forward I fall to my death and have to climb the whole thing all over again.

I've looked online and I can't find anything that explains how this is supposed to work.

If I don't get across here soon I'm going to find another game to play, I can't take this much longer.

Why make it this complicated to just jump across a small gap?
I don't remember the original game having this kind of mechanic. The hitting of the jump twice doesn't work because the grapple becomes the bow on the first jump.

Can anyone explain how you jump forward and grapple something the grapple won't grab hold of?

I'll go look at the info after dinner and try again tomorrow.

It can't be repeated enough, why are you pressing your focus button?
There is no "mode" you need to activate to do what needs to be done. You don't need your focus, you don't need your grapple, you don't need to slow-time for aiming.

You just run and jump off and press keep pressing jump, which I'm fairly certain the game explains to you when you first encounter it.

When I walk up and just stand across from the grapple point and just nothing at all happen except she jumps in the air and land on the stairs again.

Actually, I think I know what's happening - did you make sure to do the quest objective before trying to get to the other tower? You're on that first tower to break some cables holding the ship in place. Right before those stairs is where you're supposed to shoot them to break them.

If you don't do that, the game prevents you from being able to grapple to that grapple point, because otherwise you wouldn't have a way back.

And just for safe measure, here's a short video clip explaining the above comment. If it's the wrong spot or something, just let me know.

I think you are right, I still have the message shoot the cables as the quest goal.
I'll try that tomorrow, I thought that I had to get across the gap to get up high enough to shoot the clamps. So I didn't know that I should have done it already.

Yeah, the video shows it I just ran right past it every time without seeing it.

Thanks, now I may be able to move on.

Glad it helped! If you run into something like that in the future, double check to make sure you haven't missed something quest-related. If you don't know what you're looking for, it's easy to overlook it.

Had no idea that was even a thing you could do O_o

Good find, lol.

That was it, finished the first part in just a few minutes after that, leveled up to level 2 and have reached the interlude.

Thanks, everyone, I never even considered that it wouldn't let me go ahead because I still had something to do. And I was standing right on top of it, only a few feet away from where I was stuck.

Well, if I get stuck like that again I'll know better. time takes its toll, I was better at this when I did the first game. I was only 80 then.

When I went to record that clip, I just skipped the objective because I didn't think it matters. Then the usual grapple icon didn't show up. Cue the a-ha moment.

LOL ok, when he said "I am climbing the tower to the shuttle" I thought he meant at the end of the main quest. There are double-jump grapple points you need to use to ascend.

But he is in the tutorial, where I have just realized there is ALSO a tower you climb to get to a shuttle. And IIRC you need to get in position and then SHOOT the points, there is no use of the pullcaster or grapple.

A) Spoilers dude, come on.

B) This entire discussion is about how you do have to use the pullcaster and grapple mechanics in the tutorial...

At the broken stairs at the shuttle are we talking last mission or intro, if it is the intro mission there is a climbing ledge other side of the stairs you can jump too and from there the grapple point might be more visible the focus based seeing a target can sometimes be a bit op and you do not have a clear line of sight too the point.

Some jumps in this game require a dash. If you find it difficult to dash in such a small space I suggest setting the game to always dash. A lot of battles are also easier if you lock the on foot movement to always dash, as well. (even though it's immersion breaking, since Aloy's walk animations is the best woman movement animations I've seen in gaming... As well how her clothes hang and move with her)

Grappling... doesn't work like that.. you double jump and Aloy automatically grapples to special spots. Spot is represented as a circle'ish-bullseye'ish icon. (and will be seen as a diamond in Scan mode though I could be remembering wrong.. it's an icon that you will learn to reconze whatever it was.)

Sounds like you're describing the pull Grapple... and that's a little different than the normal Grapple. You pull grapple on these distinct looking metal anchors or 2 debris I beams and also milkcrate looking meshes, in this game. These meshes get blue highlighted during scan mode and it linger about 10 seconds after a scan. (vents, boxes, treasure and bars that you pull down for platforming have these mesh grids on them... even a lever can have it.) The aim icon goes from a default open X circle to a closed X circle, when on a pullable surface.

Also keep a look out for ladders. Some you have to shoot an arrow to release, and other you have to kick them down or activate them via touch and they're there for a quick climb if you mess up the platforming, and end up back at the starting point. Longer platfom puzzles will have these things.

This game is best played with a controller imo. Keyboard and mouse is a chore and will be difficult to pull off some of the maneuvers.
[CTU]Jack_Bauer Apr 30, 2024 @ 1:44pm
Short answer if you want aloy to use a grapple point wheh climbing you just jump in the air when the circle is visible that you can reach it, the only time you need to use the bow aim and grapple is when trying to pull open vents or the wall obstacles removal, for climbing it is just look at the grapple point and if you can reach your reticle will change.

and if you are climbing and need to jump backwards to reach another surface by default it is ctrl, so most of it is simple with the climbing that and later on you get the option to glide as well.

a lot of good guides online as well if you need turtorial help with doing the jumps, and as someone said controller can help if you are not that handle at keyboard and mouse.
