It can't be repeated enough, why are you pressing your focus button?
There is no "mode" you need to activate to do what needs to be done. You don't need your focus, you don't need your grapple, you don't need to slow-time for aiming.
You just run and jump off and press keep pressing jump, which I'm fairly certain the game explains to you when you first encounter it.
Actually, I think I know what's happening - did you make sure to do the quest objective before trying to get to the other tower? You're on that first tower to break some cables holding the ship in place. Right before those stairs is where you're supposed to shoot them to break them.
If you don't do that, the game prevents you from being able to grapple to that grapple point, because otherwise you wouldn't have a way back.

I'll try that tomorrow, I thought that I had to get across the gap to get up high enough to shoot the clamps. So I didn't know that I should have done it already.
Yeah, the video shows it I just ran right past it every time without seeing it.
Thanks, now I may be able to move on.
Glad it helped! If you run into something like that in the future, double check to make sure you haven't missed something quest-related. If you don't know what you're looking for, it's easy to overlook it.
Had no idea that was even a thing you could do O_o
Good find, lol.
Thanks, everyone, I never even considered that it wouldn't let me go ahead because I still had something to do. And I was standing right on top of it, only a few feet away from where I was stuck.
Well, if I get stuck like that again I'll know better. time takes its toll, I was better at this when I did the first game. I was only 80 then.
Cheers, enjoy the game! :)
When I went to record that clip, I just skipped the objective because I didn't think it matters. Then the usual grapple icon didn't show up. Cue the a-ha moment.
But he is in the tutorial, where I have just realized there is ALSO a tower you climb to get to a shuttle. And IIRC you need to get in position and then SHOOT the points, there is no use of the pullcaster or grapple.
A) Spoilers dude, come on.
B) This entire discussion is about how you do have to use the pullcaster and grapple mechanics in the tutorial...
Grappling... doesn't work like that.. you double jump and Aloy automatically grapples to special spots. Spot is represented as a circle'ish-bullseye'ish icon. (and will be seen as a diamond in Scan mode though I could be remembering wrong.. it's an icon that you will learn to reconze whatever it was.)
Sounds like you're describing the pull Grapple... and that's a little different than the normal Grapple. You pull grapple on these distinct looking metal anchors or 2 debris I beams and also milkcrate looking meshes, in this game. These meshes get blue highlighted during scan mode and it linger about 10 seconds after a scan. (vents, boxes, treasure and bars that you pull down for platforming have these mesh grids on them... even a lever can have it.) The aim icon goes from a default open X circle to a closed X circle, when on a pullable surface.
Also keep a look out for ladders. Some you have to shoot an arrow to release, and other you have to kick them down or activate them via touch and they're there for a quick climb if you mess up the platforming, and end up back at the starting point. Longer platfom puzzles will have these things.
and if you are climbing and need to jump backwards to reach another surface by default it is ctrl, so most of it is simple with the climbing that and later on you get the option to glide as well.
a lot of good guides online as well if you need turtorial help with doing the jumps, and as someone said controller can help if you are not that handle at keyboard and mouse.
