Where to find all Burrower Variants

Hi all,

I am in the process of 100% completing the base game. So far I am at about 98% and I have done all quests, obtained all Legendary weapons, collectables and pretty much cleared out the map. Only thing I'm missing is 8 variants of the Burrower. I can't seem to find and scan the 8 I am missing.

Does anyone know if there is a specific area where rare variants spawn?. Or is it mainly a game of chance and some luck involved?. Would really love to know that way I can 100% the game and move onto DLC.

All normal/elemental ones are also there in Apex variant, so if you need the latter then scan the sites where they are during the night

I found several burroers only in DLC region. Pretty sure it is random, but for me Apex plasma was found first time in Burning Shores while I was level 54.
Also apex variant of machines spawn ALOT frequent when Aloy reach lvl 60.

Also Apex Slaughterspine only can be found in Burning Shores progressing the story line.
Or I'm extremely unlucky to find Apex Sloughterspine elsewhere.

There are 3 main types of burrowers: burrower, canister burrower, and tracker burrower. You can find their machine sites here: https://mapgenie.io/horizon-forbidden-west/maps/world.

Apex variants spawn the most frequently at night. The odds of them spawning also increases the more of the standard types you kill.

The main problem is that elemental canister variants spawn randomly. But if you reload at a campfire near a canister burrower site, you should be able to scan them all eventually.

Apex Slaughterspine spawns in several locations on the mainland and in San Francisco.

It has to - there are equipment upgrades that require Apex Slaughterspine bits, and those equipment upgrades existed even before Burning Shores was released.

I was actually looking into this last night.

I'm faffing around on the MSQ so still haven't started Singularity yet (which means I can't even reach Burning Shores). I have everything except 5 machines scanned which I believe were Frost, Acid, Shock and Purgewater Burrower (all Apex versions have been obtained) and Apex Sentry Scrounger. Plus anything MSQ/BS related that I obviously can't get to yet.

Apparently the standard Purgewater Canister Burrower is only found in the arena.

From what I can tell, all other Canister variants can spawn in any Canister Burrower location. There doesn't seem to be any weighting for specific types in specific regions, but its honestly hard to get any real info on it.
In other words, getting the ones you want to spawn appears to be utterly futile and down to RNG. In maybe 30 minutes of trying last night, I got a Shock Canister Burrower multiple times, no sign of the other 2 types I was missing.
I was doing the northern spawn (where you fight the Stormbird for the armour-gathering quest) by checking them from the top of the cliff, flying away 200m and circling back and repeating.

Also need to look into where Apex Sentry Scroungers spawn ><

UPDATE *While playing through Burning Shores, I managed to find 4 of the 8 variants I need. That leaves 4 remaining. Hopefully I can find the remaining ones in the DLC world, if not I should be able to go back to the base world and try grab them.
