Took me two days of practice to master combinations and complete all 5 melee pit challenges on Ultra Hard difficulty.
According to steam achievements, only 3.8% of players completely beat all 5 melee pit champions on any difficulties.

Main idea - understand how to stagger your opponent. If your opponent is not staggered it is a really bad idea to go into heavy attack, you most likely will receive a shield bash in your face or a kick :steambored:

Combos DO work, however timings are tricky, and Aloy's behaviour is more souslike-ish, meaning that each click is queued as attack to be performed, and you cannot break attack animation when it's performed. When you take that into account, performing combos become much easier. And when it comes to those that require pause, you have to look at tip of Aloy's spear - when it shines, it's time for another attack input. You may want to practice this a bit outside of combat, because time windows are narrow, but once you have grasp on it, it should come in naturally. Especially fast resonator charge one (ligh-light-pause-light-light) is great, as detonating resonanse deals enormous damage to human enemies.

I agree that this is a very annoying mechanic and the challenges in the arenas requiring you to do a very specific combination of inputs, does not really fit this game.

I forced myself through it on Easy difficulty just to get the Enduring achievement, and will never step into an arena in this game again.
I used CE to breeze through the all the "mini game" style activities not related to the story or questing. :B1:

Most of "challenges" in the area are just tutorials that you need to complete in order to prove you have mastered given weapon technique. True challenges are fights with Arena Masters, which have very uneven difficulty level, from faceroll in Chainscrape, to double enemy fight, to shield guy, to gimmic fight with Enduring.

do you mean, cheat engine? and how do you do that?

Don't bother with light attack
Always go with heavy attack
Hold heavy melee to charge up
Just wait your opponent to attack first, then dodge while still charging the heavy attack
After dodge, you will charge the heavy attack again and just build up the blast
Repeat 4-5 dodge/charge, your blast heavy attack well be ready
Then just release blast heavy and chain with arrow shot
Repeat again until you win

not really difficult to just time the dodge/attacks right? every 0,3/0,5sec a click for a combo, delay till spear gives a blink and continue to finish the combo

light-light-pause-light-light = spinning scythe my friend.

light-light-light-pause-light = enery surge where you build up energy more quickly

There's a CE table that stops the timer, makes you invisible, and gives you 1 hit kill among the many things it offers. It even gives your machine strike pieces 99 health too. :B1:

These melee pits are absolute garbage tier content. The melee combat system in this game is so basic, yet they tried to add complexity to it, and these are obviously a way to force you to partake in it.
Just spent an hour beating the pair in Bulwark (Very Hard - if that matters). Doesn't matter what you're doing, the enemy will just randomly interrupt you mid-combo. Not to mention how utterly jank everything is. Its great fun watching the guy with the totally-a-training-hammer flash step forwards so your timing is off for the dodge.

For the last guy I may have to try the cheese of planting traps in the arena.

you get visual ques and also you can hear with some of them when building them up, took me a while on console to get the melee pits done, it is all about timing and no button smashing when trying to do the melee pit "training"

This is the way. Takes time to get used to the timing of it, but once you get it it's fairly easy.

Not gonna lie tho, on ps5 Ultra Hard it was a sweaty mess, but if you start timing the dodging correctly and also your attacks it's doable.
