More spears?

I'm a little confused as I'm half way through the game, but only have 1 spear. I see there are a total of 16 different spears possible. Am I missing something, or is this just a late-game mechanic?

You are looking at the wrong thing, there are only 3 spears in HFW- the one you start with, the preorder/complete edition bonus and the one you get from the Sun-King at the start of the game.
Passive skills change the stats on it, and there's one(?) quest reward that upgrades it too

There aren't that many spears, there are more than 4 Shredders.

The number of free slots is completely unrelated to the number of different items you can find.

oh, gotcha. i assumed those slots got filled in as you found more of the weapons. it's strange then there's so many empty Spear slots if they don't get filled in
