me. i definitely open every chest i come across. The exception is if it seems like i'll have to go through a wall or something to get it, then i pretty much just ignore it. If i cant loot it in 5 seconds then its not worth it. The rewards in these chests, so far, have been completely useless. The exception being the chests they put right in plain sight that have tons of stuff like traps and health potions, usually found as an obvious reward for beating a quest.
the real reward as someone else said is the experience points and machine parts. sometimes its satisfying to just charge in and kill everything with melee instead of trying to play rambo.
In the end, I'd say that they are good to pick when you are passing by, but not that much to chase after them, unless you are runing poor, resources-dry or are just man-sized hamster :>
(Aaaaand my favorite one is the box that is guarded by Apex Shellsnapper - there is datapoint next to it, thou).
