There's a New Game+ mode and you can replay it but its fairly linear and you dont have any real choices that change the course of the game.
No game is perfect on Launch.
You are right and I believe HZD can be found pretty cheaply now, this really is a sequel to the first game and I couldnt imagine starting off with HFW, having played HZD, which is also a really good game does help
If the OP hasn't played HZD then I would start with that before playing HFW. The backstory and lore of this game is brilliant and mind bending and constantly grows - slowly but amazingly - throughout. HZD can be had for super cheap on sale.
And OP - don't read too many articles (or any) on Horizon before you play. Don't let the backstory get spoiled...it's amazing to realize stuff as you go. I think it's amazing.
Yes.... its one the best narratives in gaming imo.
The further I get into the story, the more I regret telling people that the brief recap at the beginning of Forbidden West was good enough if they never played Zero Dawn. There's just so much of the story that's interconnected with the original that people will miss out if they never played the first one. Technically you could play only the second game, but you'd only get half the experience.
