In general, It is nearly impossible to dodge some boss machines attacks. The big machine that burrows itself in the ground and pops out of the ground was extremely annoying because Aloy would stagger even after dodging the machine giving her no time to aim an arrow. Aloy's hit box seems to be massive.
I finally found a corner that the machine couldn't reach me, baited it out of the ground, then I'd run back to the corner and kill it with a thousand cuts. Yes, I "cheesed" the game. Playing the game as designed was a losing battle. This is all on normal, mind you. I was level 25 and the quest level was 17. I'd lose all my health in a matter of seconds no matter what timed dodging or trickery I did.
The machine's weakness (ice) helped but was not nearly fast enough. Being out in the open only meant certain death. It was turning into Souls game. "Smart" game play does nothing if you can't dodge attacks. On a side note, I'm not the kind of person that appreciates memorizing patterns of a boss and doing trial and error like with the Souls games. I find no joy in that.
I'm concerned for other boss machines down the road. I'm currently trying to build up my arsenal. pouches, and armor (which seems to to have the effect of just wearing a T-shirt.
I do like the fact that I can't run blindly into a battle and expect it to go well, even on normal difficulty.
