I think that's why people call her "ugly". The moves to make her more masculine to underline her "girlbossiness" didn't fly, and it's not because of toxic male gamers: Let's face it, the Horizon franchise is all about strong female character leads, so I doubt anyone really had issue with kick-ass Aloy.
The problem imho is similar to casting a new actor for the second part of a film franchise, e.g. Jodie Foster in "Silence of the lambs" but Julianne Moore in "Hannibal". We can expect the same discussion again when the next "James Bond" actor will be presented.
People just dislike changes to a favourite character, and the changes Aloy received weren't done very well and were perceived as unnecessary or triggered by virtue signaling.
In my opinion that's probably part of it but the other part is that Guerilla reacted to criticism from HZD: That Aloy was raised as a Paria and still ended up being really nice and helpful towards everybody.
Hence Guerilla made her more "badass", with an attitude, and ultimately, more masculine.
Which has lead tp her character becoming less likeable than in the first part, she's now more of a broken hero rather than a shiny knight.
The big difference between Aloy in Zero Dawn vs Forbidden West is the huge graphical improvements made to the series, there are a lot more polygons interweaved and smoved into Aloy (and the rest of the characters & NPCs) compared to the last game. Aloy face is more realistic looking like a real female face than ever.
Go back to the old Zero Dawn game, you can see that there was less detail and emphasis on her everywhere which probably to the low brow gamer looks like a thin Aloy. When nope, its just a dated Aloy with less design work compared to the newer games.
The character improvements in additional to the world detail improvements is also what adds an extra tax on this game.
What's even more crazier is that the DLC Burning Shore, they improve the character designs even further in the cut scenes, my GPU takes a nice hit in performance now.
Still no face mod for Aloy because all the complainers are either too stupid or too lazy to make one themselves
