Melee Pit Tutorials are broken
Forget the challenges, the stupid melee pit tutorials are broken. Half of them say "tap left mouse" and that's it. They don't even tell you how to trigger the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ combat ability it's supposedly a tutorial for.

Which imbecile didn't test this?

You don't get the combat ability in the melee pit. That's why it doesn't tell you how.
You unlock it in the skill tree menu. And that's where it is also written how to use it.

It IS broken.

This one want work what so ever.
I press RB, i press RB i try hold RB stupid B hits the guy, "wrong input".
I press RB and wait, press RB wait, Hold RB, aloy hits the guy, "wrong input".
I press LMB, i press LBM, is Press and Hold LMB, Aloy hits the guy, "wrong input".
Quick press buttons + Hold don't work, SLOW press button + try hold - don't work.

Even the stupid "AI cheating gauntlet" is better than this broken POS

Yup... working as intended.

Really those trials have tighter frame timing then Tekken.

So RB, RB, Hold then release RB actually means -
Tap RB , tap RB, Press RB (try wait until the little flash and spark noise) release.
I'm over explaining because some people misunderstand the way it's written in game and think the hold is carrying on from the second tap so they are missing a hit.

Aloy will strike on the tap, strike on the tap, strike on the start of the press and then finally do the half moon on the release.

You usually have to do all of the input quite quickly, don't wait for the hit to land before pressing the next in sequence, if any of the strikes fails to hit it will fail you, and with some of the sequences pushing a direction at the same time can give the wrong attack.

and that is exactly what i did. (and wrote above i did)
I press RB, i Press RB i press and hold RB and aloy attacks, invalid input, screen goes black and try again. Consistently.
It doesn't matter how fast or slow you press RB. Game Newer recognise you HOLD RB, it is always performed as a normal RB attack, and of course it then fails.

I would have to guess you are either entering it all in too fast, or too slow, or you are hitting other controls such as movement that may break it then. As I ran through the Half Moon Slash pit trial multiple times myself while writing that post to make sure I wasn't giving you inaccurate information.

Yes, but that information disappears once you unlock it. Which means you're left with no idea on how to trigger the move.

This is ludicrous.

It's still there in the skill tree. But you can't open the skill tree from the tutorial fight, the button is disabled there. Which is indeed stupid. Some moves are broken too. If the opponent is still in the "got hit" animation, you can't hit them with some special attacks. You actually have to hold the button long enough so the opponent returns to default animation, only then the strike will connect.

The icing on the cake is that if you can't complete this nonsense for these reasons the pit master calls you a pathetic loser. Even though you'd beat the crap out of all of them with no effort without these "tutorials".

Pit Challenges are trash. Don't waste your time. Melee is useless in this game, the combos are slow and difficult to pull off, they leave you vulnerable to attack after completion, and do very little damage. The Devs introduced the Pit Challenges just to make you spend points on the Melee skill tree. Thankfully, you can reset skill points at will, or I would have deleted this game and asked for a refund.

For me personally only the Bulwark and Thornmarsh boss fights were hard.... took me a while to beat them but eventually got it done (this is on UH btw)

For the enduring fight, you just basically cheese the block breaker and nora warrior combo sequence over and over and if you want to mix in the smoke drums to confuse her, then you can go for power strikes
Alcator Sep 19, 2024 @ 11:21pm
Yes, the melee combat is not good in this game, and it's infuriating that one achievement is locked behind ALL of the pits, meaning to get it, you need to do all of those combos correctly.

They tried to do something new and sadly mostly failed in implementing it. It happens.
d.onderka Oct 9, 2024 @ 3:31am
I'm doing the Thornmarsh challenge and instructions are "Power attack, light attack, wait for flash on spear then 4 more light attacks and shoot opponent" and do that 3 times. So I hit him with power attack and he is energized so I shoot him (out of order ) and ok I'm now 1/3 combos done. Then I hit him with power attack and ... wrong input. ... This is bad testing and bugs. If I did it wrong in the first sequence It should told me then not to count it as ok and punish me just seconds later. This is very poorly designed.

Not sure if it's worth bothering. The melee combat system is incredibly lackluster. Heck the final fights in some cases are more down to luck rather than personal skill because it's a question of luck if the enemy decides to launch an attack that 2 shots you at a moment where there is no way to prepare for it or react to it. Not to mention the lowlands challenge having an indestructible shield forcing you to only attack from the rear, which is 100% reliant on the AI not deciding that they will stand around for a bit, running down the clock

While the tutorials are meant for you to perform different combos when it comes to the boss fights, its just down to using block breaker and nora warrior combos mixed with some power strikes in between when possible...

Thats what got me through all of them and the same in the Enduring fight as well on UH difficulty.

You can place a trap in the pit before starting the fight, for this one. Still bad design, but at least you can get through it.
