The visuals are stunning. I’ve been in SF, and I could visualize places I’ve been making it quite eerie.
This has much more annoying controls for bot Aloy and mounted controls. And enemies are way more annoying to fight against. Not more difficult. But simply more annoying.
And i think the resource gathering vs consumption rate has been a little bit missbalanced.
Forbidden west assumes you already know basics from the first game and allow you to start an Ultra Hard difficulty from beginning. And that's where the game shines. It's unforgivable hard, you are literally oneshoted by every enemy for the firs 20+ hours of the game. It's frustrating, painful and almost make me give up. And that just exactly what I was looking from Ultra Hard difficulty.
Stealth and Combat is much more detailed and complex compared to first game, but not obvious. Needed lots of attempts and fails, and it's super enjoyable after you realise how to beat every machine in the game (and there is 50+ different machines with each has it's unique combat tactics).
So Forbidden West is a massive improvement for those who love challenges.
This game.. it's all about long range fighting, melee is more of an afterthought and grinding for loot is a thing, now. Stuff won't just RNG drop. Have to farm weakpoint to get a chance of certain drops. Weapons need machine part loot items, or you're not allowed to buy said weapon item. On top of needing it to craft ammo. You get a storage box, that excess stuff automaticlly goes to, but you can only access your stuff at chests that are pretty sparse and far apart in the game (so end up with tons of wood and barries that you tend to never use... except for long stints of arena style battles)
I think the devs themselves knew that most people won't like this "tear down body part to get a chance to get a specific loot from it" mechanic. Especially since most of those body parts you need are either under or inside the robots and you kill it before you could even tear them down with tear damage. Or since the general HP of the bots is less then the combined body part HP of them, you always have to decide what loot you want and what part to tear down. Because you can't get everything. Which only adds even more RNG to the table.
Everyone for their own but because of this increaced grind and RNG factor, i activated "easy loot" after the first 2 hours of gameplay. And it is still a fair amount of grind.
Btw, I'll address the slights and pros I heard the most (all are ...in comparison to the first game...). I play on hard.
First and foremost, get Shut Up Alloy mod from Nexus. It's horrible what they've done to gameplay spoiling in this game. But this mod fixes it to a great degree, so don't worry.
1. The reputable need for switching the elemental attacks all the time.
I use mostly just normal arrows and Alloy's focus. Sometimes, I involve some bombs, because, you know, bombs are fun, and sometimes I use those electric line-traps because their effect on machines is rather cool. That's it. I don't bother with anything else more then ocassionally, and I do perfectly fine in all combats. I'm 22nd level.
2. The reputable low ammo.
Man, it's called upgrades. And it's fun to get them. I never understood this one.
3. The reputable grind for un-appearing legendary upgrades.
Eh? I upgrade anything regularly. Yeah, I have to hunt large machines for the best parts, sometimes repeatably, but that's the deal in a game, isn't it? Again, never understood this one, I don't agree. And believe me, because I usually don't like MMOs where grind is truly real exactly because of this.
4. Reputably weak melee.
Like, I don't know. Mele is definitely useful for stealth, finishing, and some of those have-at-ya feelings. But most of the time, at least for me, it feels cumbersome, slow, and weak—however justifiable it is from the realistic point of view. Sometimes, I experienced some pretty strong combos, but lol, I haven't been able to reproduce those deliberately, nor understood what has happened. It also doesn't help that monsters' attacks are 3x faster than me and their attacks feel pretty chaotic. Carefuly timing the dodges and attacks is the key. All of that made me not to bother with melee much (or at all).
Is it a bad design? Is it only my skill issue? Is it part of both? Idk, but I'd say that the part of my skill issue is real. There's a lot to learn in this game, and that's actually great, even though it means you don't get to learn everything.
5. Alloy unable to stand quickly, getting knocked down all the time.
Yeah, she does get up slower than before, and yeah, if you don't fight properly, monsters will knock you down all the time. But this here is ONLY a skill issue and nothing else. Focus enough, use both slide and dodge, and you'll be fine.
6. The open world, writing, stories.
Yeah, that's pretty much the same as it was. The characters feel palpable and believable. Their personal stories and quests make up for an immense coherence and atmosphere of the whole. I loved that in the first game, it's the same here. They say the main line isn't as good. Hmm, I don't know. Might be true, mightn't too. I am stuck at doing my usual open-world mélange, I haven't finished much of the main line yet.
5. Reputably weak skills.
Again, I don't know why people say skills don't matter. Skills matter a lot. You'll feel every new weapon technique, better healing, better gathering, better sneaking, probably even better melee (if you can melee better than me
Overal, I like the second game. It feels a lot like the first one.
1. I like the need of different elements. It was important aspect of the 1st game too.
But in HZD it was more well balanced. You could have 1 Hunter bow with all the different ammo variations. So you could have your entire weapon wheel loadout filled with different kind of weapons like ropecaster, tripwire, Hunter bow, sling ect. And for all the required/needed elemental ammunitions.
In HFW your weapons can ONLY support 2 elemental types at max. (i consider "impact" and "tear" as physical) So fighting robots especially huge ones with different elemental requirements and strategies was much more fluid and satisfactory. Now i always find myself going into the inventory and switching and changing between weapons in my loadout.
2. This was the only thing what was more annoying in Zero Dawn. Hunting those hard to find animals. Now it isn't such a chore. But the low ammo issue also consists not just of the numerical low ammo count in your pockets. But also to the fact that every ammo which is other than the basic hunter bow arrow requires robot components which are always scares. There is no "robotic muscle" in this game which would be sufficient enough to keep up with my demand on it. Every fight is feeding up more resources what i can gather. Now resource grind became a reality in this game. But you yourself wrote that you mainly use normal arrows. So i see why it is strange for you why this is an issue for many. Understandable.
3. Isn't an issue for me neither. So i would agree there. BUT don't forget, this is a heavily stroy driven adventure game. Not a Monster Hunter game. The main focus of Horizon was never the hunt of huge robonimals. It is an element of the game yes. But not the main focus of it.
4. Totally agree here. And i also struggle with reproducing some combo movies which on paper and according to the description of it, it should be braindeadly easy. But i think the controls of this game are generally pretty bad. So no wonder melee is wonky as well. But this is again something which worked better in Zero dawn.
5. Well still can be annoying and is annoying since again compared to Zero Dawn, now literally every enemy has a CC ability. At least one. And since all of them now have the ability to spawn in multiple other enemies too right under your feet, it is pretty much impossible to not get hit by enemies which are outside of your peripheral view. (and what i also dislike is the way too close camera angle. Simetimes can't see or follow where the enemies are jumping at) So if you are someone who isn't only focusing on killing enemies but also strategically trying to get specific body parts, good luck with that "don't get hit" when there is a dozen hippidihoppidy kengurus and hawks around you.
6. Agree there. Yeah okay the devs forgot what personality Aloy had and now she is a totally different person. So the hate around it is also understandable. But I too play Horizon for the story. I go further.....i would love this game even more if it wouldn't be open world.
7. I unlocked some weapon augments and tbh never use them. They feel underwhelming. The most valuable thing what i always look forward by a level up is the HP bonus i get. :D
2nd game...idk, stopped after 9-10 hours because the story is boring af.
graphics are fine but idk...a game that doesn't need to exist really. devs should have tried something new.
As for game difficulty, Horizon Zero Dawn was a challenge and mobs were not sponges like Forbidden West even on Ultra Hard. If you are like me and have to have all the armor collections and weapons and everything leveled the max you will find this a game major grind. If you want to enjoy playing on ultra hard {and not hiding in the bushes}. you will have to grind up your weapons which takes a lot of in game time because the drops rates are terrible.
In all honesty, they should have had a three different endings because the game demands, three play troughs. Only having one ending suggests they ran out time and budget because the start of the game you have three different interaction options. And these choices, while affecting gear drops, have no affect on the ending. I think to replace this story, they decided to waste player time in the game by having them farm for better gear instead of enjoy options in the story that could have made this game a masterpiece like Cyberpunk.
Aloy was always neutral to everyone in a romantic point of view in Zero Dawn. And i loved that in that game, that finally we didn't have to deal with any kind of idiotic romance options. It was all about the story of the world and the adventure. Did this change?
But even so "early" in the game have to agree with the grind and spongyness of bots. Feels much more of a chore to get parts and materials for crafting. And basic phisical damage arrows still feel the most viable and OP in the game. Starting to feel like elemental damage is totally pointless here.
