I got about 1/2 way through the first one and got side tracked by real life. Do I need to go finish the 1st, or is there a synopsis available?

The story recap in the game (mentioned by joridiculous) isn't very good, all told. You definitely *want* the story before playing this one though, yes. If you want to play the first one again and finish it, you won't be missing out on much - it's still an incredible game.

As great as this game is though, the first one is still a blast so don't feel apprehensive of starting it over / using a mod to catch up to where you were / etc. if you want to enjoy it. Very much worth it.

HZD had an incredible story (many people are saying). HFW does not require you to know the previous story.

But (many people are saying) you are doing yourself a disservice by failing to experience the story in HZD.

But you do you. Even setting the story aside, both games have good gameplay (many people are saying). So if you are here for the gameplay, sure, just stay for the gameplay.
