Game crashes + feedback.
I own a decent system with Windows 11x64 with 32GB of RAM, Ryzen 5800X CPU, RTX 4070 Ti GPU (latest Driver 551.86), however, game seem to crash after aprox 30 minutes of playing and when i say crash i mean system freeze (requires reset) or BSOD.
My system is sable and run any other demanding game (cyberpunk 2077 ) with no issues at all.
I expected things not to work on a 1st day release, but come on things like these should not even pass QA.
On another aspect, I noticed some QoL changes that are welcome if were not so poorly implemented double tap dodge is a nightmare, toggle sprint, needs to be reactivated after some actions, key remapping (hard-coded key actions are a NO NO on a PC game, everything needs to be remapped ) so good look trying to remap TAB, or god forbid use a combination of keys SHIFT+LEFT click for heavy attack *like we had in the previous game*.
To ask full price for a game released 2 years ago and arrive in this state even after being delayed leaves you thinking about the state of the gaming industry in general this has become the norm rather then exception.
I sincerely hope you address this feedback.

Fix provided by OZZO you cant find it in the 1st page:
I can't guarantee it will work for you but so far this has fixed the crashing issues for me.
Go to Steam to Horizon Forbidden West settings > Manage > Browse local files
Right click on HorizonForbiddenWest executable > Properties
In Compatibility tab tick Run this program in compatibility mode for > Select Windows 8 in drop-down menu
Sad news:
after 1 hour 30 mins of playing with the fix BSOD again, guess ill play the game when it gets fixed, well at least i've tried.
UPDATE: limiting the framerate/enabeling Vsync 60 seems to dramatically improve the stability ( now it crashes after 4-5 hours or so and just crashes to desktop no BSOD or WinFreze )

IN CONCLUSION: game is poorly optimized for certain hardware combinations and might also be issues at a driver level.

In over 10 hours I haven't experienced a single crash or freeze, sounds like hardware related...

I don't believe so. So far this is the only game that behaves like this and believe me i own a hand-full of demanding games that I've run just to sanity check, not to mention the amount of benchmarks and stress tests I've run just to iron out that possibility.

I crashed 4 times in 70 minutes of playing, 1 of them straight BSOD as well. The game is a technical mess even with the game ready Nvidia driver. Here's hoping for some day 2 patches, but I doubt it.

I logged 3 different types of crashes Cannot even play the game

To get into Forbidden west, differentiate between
Launcher
Home Screen

Home screen, new game or continue, while playing the cinematic, both the game andf steam will just disappear aka END TASK

Home screen, new game opr coneinue. Just black screen. Client hang

Home screen new game or continue, while playing cinematics, BSOD. Looks like a Graphical sisue. Screen splits into 4. words too interlaced to determine exact error code

SPECS
AMD RYZEN 7 5800X
MSI X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI
64GB DDR4-3200 CRU BAL ELITE
SAPPHIRE RX 6800 16G NITRO
Lots of storage
latest AMD chipset, windows w11 pro update, AMD Adrenaline 24.3.1

Am gonna guess its either a game issue or GPU driver issue. gotta wait it out

Could be driver issues. I haven't had any issues with the game thus far aside from a graphics setting. I've had games that had just random crashes while others were just fine, and it always came down to a driver issue.

Write in version number, baby.

Crashed about 5 or 6 times in ~80 minutes. Ryzen 9 7950X3D/RTX4090 (551.86 drivers, from 3 days ago). Otherwise game seems to be running fine and not even stressing out my computer.

It means your system (be it OS, drivers or hardware) is unstable.

End-user system stability (or rather, lack there of) has absolutely nothing at all to do with QA pass.
When QA encounter an issue like that, in lager companies they send affected PCs to their IT team for repair, because it's an end-user system stablity problem.

That's because not all games are equal.
You can get BSOD in 5 games, and no in 50 others.
That still mean your PC is unstable in some way during specific workloads.

Latest is 551.86, it's always better to post the actual version since "latest" doesn't really mean anything anymore (people get stuck in R460 family of drivers and their software says it's latest, same for Windows 10 updates for example).

Also, do keep in mind that drivers are a buggy pile of software just as much any anything else these days.

This SOLUTION worked for me.

Go to Steam to Horizon Forbidden West settings > Manage > Browse local files

Right click on HorizonForbiddenWest executable > Properties

In Compatibility tab tick Run this program in compatibility mode for > Select Windows 8 in drop-down menu

SORTED?
Arc Mar 22, 2024 @ 4:54am
That's not a solution, but a workaround, to a hardware instability.
OZZO Mar 22, 2024 @ 5:10am
I'd take a working workaround over a permanent crash any day.
What exactly is this "hardware instability" you're talking about

Ty for sharing, will try to see how it works.

Shader compilation seem to take forever now no crashes so far tough.

It limits the CPU capabilities to certain degree, lesser load means less chance to trigger that instability.
