Crashing repeatedly on compiling shaders
Every time I start the game, it gets through the opening cinematic just fine and then the game menu, but as soon as I try to start a new game, it crashes right when it starts to compile shaders. An error message *occasionally* pops up VERY briefly, but when it does it disappears within a fraction of a second. I eventually managed to snag a pic of it on my phone after repeatedly booting it up and letting it crash. The message says that I don’t have enough VRAM, which makes little sense since I’m on a 4090 (and for the sake of full disclosure, a 13900k and 32GB of RAM).

Usually it’s just the game that crashes but a few times it crashed the whole pc. I’ve been on driver 537.58 for awhile since it seems like the last stable driver Nvidia has released, with a lot of unstable garbage drivers released since then. I tend to wait for stable Nvidia drivers to update them. After the first crash (and against my better judgment since a lot of people are having issues with this one, much like many of the recent driver releases), I figured I’d go ahead and update to the latest driver which is *allegedly* optimized for HFW. It didn’t help in the least. Windows 10 is fully updated, as are all my other drivers.

I’ve tried verifying integrity of game files, uninstalling/reinstalling the game, increasing the shader file size from within NVCP, increasing the windows page file size, running an sfc scan (which came up clean, but I went ahead and ran the three DISM commands checkhealth, scanhealth, and repairhealth anyway), and a couple of other things, all to no avail.

Zero Dawn is one of my favorite games, and I’ve been looking forward to the Forbidden West pc port since even before they officially announced it. I’m sure I’ll love it once I can actually get it to work, but atm it’s literally completely unplayable for me.

Is anyone else having this issue? If so, do you have a fix/workaround? My system has been 100% stable before now, and I’m not running any overclocks on my gpu or cpu. I even have game mode turned off in my bios, but I do have XMP turned on. Might try turning it off just to compile shaders, but I’ve never had any issues with this build at all before.

Skyrim AE + 1000 mods runs perfectly, but I can't compile shaders on this game? Gotta be kidding me.

whoa amazing. you can run a 13 year old game (SE from 2016 is the same ported to 64 bit) but have some struggle with a 1 year old game (base game 2 year) How strange.
I've started seeing this today, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D + AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX on GIGABYTE X670E AORUS Xtreme and 128 gb Corsair Vengeance RAM. It's worked fine since release until today. I've changed video and chipset drivers, no joy. The only indication anything is happening is the drive light blinking otherwise it just say wait on shader compilation. No other problems noted.
13900k 64gb 6000mhz rtx 4090. No Problem here. Maybe you try with xmp disabled and an positiv vcore offset for cpu. because this happens to me with to tight uv
Try setting up a paging file in computer settings.
I suggest manually setting it on your fastest SSD and disabling it on others.

I had that message on startup (only on startup). The message talks about insufficient memory. Page file will effectively use your SSD/HDD as a RAM supplement. It's slower, but it will prevent crashes. Anyways, I set it to 40GB and didn't crash again (despite the game caching shaders a few more times on startup for some reason.

There is no reason what so ever to mess around with Pagefile settings in Windows 10&11
Win set up the default when installing, and it is more then enough for what you need
I've one ssd dedicated to page space for the entire system and that's all that drive does and that's mostly to keep those read/write cycles isolated. What does the vcore offset do? I've tried disabling vulkan preshading and windows 8 compatibility with no effect (expected, but wanted to check those off the list).

The biggie for me is it worked fine for 120 hours in game, then suddenly not.

I actually got through the prologue and now it keeps crashing during shader cache right before the title intro cutscene after
So I lowered my texture quality to Low and it apparently worked

This actually worked for me. Haven't had a crash since. Texture is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ though, but I'd rather deal with that than crashing every 30 minutes or so
🤣I gave up for awhile and started Dragons Dogma 2 for the first time. It went through it shadow compiling just fine so I tried again with Forbidden West and it worked as normal. I've no idea what connection there might be, but there it is.🤣🤣

Same issue here, 13900K and RTX 4090.
i have a same issue
Compiling shaders is VERY demanding on the CPU and can cause these types of error if the CPU is not 100% stable. This is a known issue on high end 13/14th gen intel chips.

Even if you've not overclocked your cpu, many motherboards push crazy amounts of power into the chip if you've selected multi core enhancement etc in the bios.

Nvidia actually made a statement on this not too long ago as the error that gets displayed points to the GPU being at fault, when this is generally not the case.

Please see this https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/nvidia-blames-intel-for-gpu-vram-errors-tells-geforce-gamers-experiencing-13th-or-14th-gen-cpu-instability-to-contact-intel-support.

can confrim this was 100% my problem german intel support is not even aware of this problem i watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcjkNSySzsg&list=LL&index=3&t=960s -- changed bios settings and now its working. im kinda worried that my CPU took some damage from the massive power supply over the years (im on i7-13700k) and thinking about returning it and getting a new one. ive been playing for about 10 hours now without a crash but it could return any moment beacuse ive been so far already once.

This SOLUTION worked for me.

Go to Steam to Horizon Forbidden West settings > Manage > Browse local files

Right click on HorizonForbiddenWest executable > Properties

In Compatibility tab tick Run this program in compatibility mode for > Select Windows 8 in drop-down menu

SORTED?

THANKS!!!! This solved my problem

HW: 14900, 4090 Strix OC, 64GB Dominator Titanium. Aorus Z790 Pro X:steamhappy:
I had issues with the game crashing when trying to load a game at the start or when i fast travelled when i managed to get into the gam, and it seems my CPU might be set too high for the game, so causing issues so i used intel extreme tuning utility too see if HFW had the same issue Remnant 2 had and it seems it did, the fix i found at remnant 2 comment section about the tool and getting it to try and avoid the crashes.

Once i reduced my performance ratio from 55 too 52 lowered it by 3
And core effiency i lowered by 2 the game has been stable since then for me just need to see if the game crashes due to some update and it seems to have been reverted back to default when that happens.

My CPU is just a i9 13900kf so nothing major and that fixed it for me with the game so i hope this can give you an idea of a fix, hope you get it sorted.
