cant throw stones

I´m at the spot to take down two enemy machines together with Val. We must kill them silently by distracting the Machine by throwing a stone. The Screen hint says to press and hold down left mouse button to throw the stone, but it does only cause Aloy to hit with the Speer...any suggestions?

I am stuck in the same spot. How the hell do I select a rock to throw it?

My wife was stuck here too. I've been gaming for over 30 years and even I didn't see how it's supposed to work either. Granted, I've never play the series, but it should be more obvious.

Figured it out after searching through the controls for things to try, the prompt that tells you how to do is completely wrong. Ignore it.

Press Z or X to cycle through your tools until you get to the rocks selected in the bottom left corner, and then tap R to ready the rock, then you can click and throw it.

Ridiculous.

You use z and x to scroll through the available items, then tap r to use item.

this was a big fail for people on PS as well lol. Once you get it...you get it

z and x rotate the tools wheel, the game might be requiring you to explicitly select the rocks the first time, even if rocks are the only thing in the tools wheel.

Then tap r to switch to throwing the rock, and hold L-mouse to aim, release L-mouse to throw.

(I was also blocked for a short while at this point, I think what I describe above is what got me past it.)
