Define "pretty packed". I have been playing the game off and on since it came out. I can clearly remember that the server was so packed that when you went into certain sections of the game it would get really clippy.
I think the largest group I have seen recently was in the JLA Watchtower. And even then I never experienced any choppiness. While I did not count how many people I saw I would guess it was maybe 30 or so. When you compare that to other games of the same age or older, it becomes rather pathetic.
Also, look at these forums. It's pretty much dead. Go to the STO forums and take a look. The Steam STO forums are very active and STO is an older game! That right there should be a clue.
Not had an issue getting groups for newer content.
Perhaps join a guild, then you can arrange runs frequently.
Also I have only ever bought a 1 month sub to unlock character slots, powers and bank slots, remove cash limit etc I think it was £5. Totally fine, not spent anything else since, certainly I have had more than my money's worth.
Also I make sure to repair my gear.....so that it wont break on me.
To be fair I am not bothered about having the most powerful character, I still get into dungeons and can hold my own, granted I am often one of the lower scoring players but that is fine, I still have fun.
Oh and I never pvp. So it could well be broken. Pve seems fine.
If you want to be one of the most powerful players, then perhaps you do indeed need to pay a lot, I have no idea as I do not play the game like that.
And the reason they use these protections is for in game chat so if someone is bullied and they do nothing about it and it causes death in the real world via suicide or other then daybreakers is not liable.
