I believe though what happens is if a player hasn't logged in after a certain amount of time their name can be taken from them. I had it happen to one of my toons I hadn't played in a while. In my case I have the name with a -PC by the name and a rename token which I dropped in storage because I'm not renaming jack. lol
As far as I know that's the common practice on a lot of mmos like this one and Lord of the Rings Online. A friend of mine who had a lifetime subscription dropped that game like a bad habit for having one of his names pulled on him and customer service refusing to fix it. Personally I can't say I blame him since he was actively logging the game in. I would have done the same in his shoes. I have done the same actually. lol
So I'd be in that group that says be creative because first come is first served mate. Besides it's to easy to get the name you want just by altering/changing the spelling for it with an extra letter here or letter there. So naming a toon has never really been an issue for me mate.
Interesting character name btw.. I wouldn't have thought of it mate. lol
That having been said like I told you I had one of my toons I didn't use very often get altered. It really didn't bother me none considering it wasn't my main toon. I just left it as is. So based off my own experience what I think happens in a case like what you described is they can be claim if the person hasn't logged their character in after a certain period of time.
The circumstances your talking about I actually don't have an issue with because to me those people really didn't really have much interest or invest much in to the game in the first place. So I don't really see them loosing out on to much. So I actually agree with you on those points.
Like you I kind of like to do a story background on my toons also for the most part. In your analogy about the Avengers I agree. For me if I were going to make a toon based on Marvel I would have done an alternate reality version. For example instead of naming them Kaptin Merica69 and Ironnn Mannn I would have went with something like Captain AmericaFirst and Iron ManiacMan. To me that just sounds better. And if you want to add a comedic twist you can go with something like Iron Mansplaining to piss off the SJW's. lol Feel free to use those if ya want mate. lol
I can't really say I never played a game because I didn't get the name I wanted. I always managed to come up with something based off of the type of toon I was creating. If I go threw the trouble of downloading a game then I am going to play it regardless. That's just me though.
Anyway from what I can tell they had something called a name reclaim event. Not sure when that happened, but this is the most recent thread I could find on the topic.

Looks like some people were wanting to have another one. Not sure when and/or if that will happen though. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Maybe you will get lucky mate.
