XP gain is way too slow
How come I can have completed all story missions, all side missions and unlocked all attributes but still have 6 abilities left to unlock? I enjoy the game and everything but now I've finished everything there is to do besides kill mobs to unlock abilities. Am I supposed to just grind mobs to unlock abilities which I can only use to grind more mobs? Either the XP and ability progression is too slow, or I just didn't die enough during the campaign.

Huh, I have no idea what you are experiencing. My first time through,I had unlocked all abilities that I could purchase while I still had 3 left to get from story progression. I just played however I wanted to, had tons of fun and only died twice. Granted, I did finish all the story and side stuff before maxing out every "M" currency stat.

I also am the type of person who likes to really get sucked into the world and just have fun, so I've never rushed through the campaign or story in a game. People might say I go through games slowly or spend too much time admiring the world or just stalking the AI to see what it does.

Lastly, if you need to get lots of XP very quickly just go make a big stronghold very upset. I remember fighting about 40 Uruk with 4 Captains in the middle with me. THAT was crazy, and while I did eventually perish, I was able to acquire many thousands of XP before dying.
Really? I got almost everyone unlocked before going into the second map. Only things I didn't have unlocked were the story line abilities. The game isn't that hard to level. Just kill and kill. Go to a strong hold, get them to set off the alarm, and just stay there killing all the orcs for about 30mins.
My first playthrough I was having so much fun just killing everyone that I had all abilities, except those unlocked by main missions on second map, and all weapon and stealth skills unlocked except for last row of skills all on first map.
^I had the same experience as this guy

If you have really played all the white, red and yellow missions on the maps, you should have all unlocked! Maybe you missed something. Are you sure there is nothing more on the maps to do?
EDIT: Maybe if you play the yellow story mission to fast not all red mission show!?!

Maybe you didn't do the "save the slaves" missions, little fist icons, you have to save them, then they say thank you and a fist icon inside a diamond comes on screen when you do those missions you get 100+ mirian, and I think they are never ending, but if you never save the slaves you never get those missions and the fist icon where slaves need to be saved are only on your radar indicator, I don't think they ever show up your big/main map.

thanks everyone, i have done all the story missions and all the red missions. There are still some red missions on the map but they are all vendetta missions which get added when my friends die. I had a look at the counters in game and apparently there are two 'free the slaves' missions left somewhere too, however I checked and both of these mission only give ~400XP and I need over 4000 to unlock the next ability and presumably more to unlock the ones after that.

I guess all I can do is grind to unlock them all but it seems kind of pointless when all I can do with the new skills is kill more generic mobs.

I am guessing you rushed the main story to fast and didn't take the oportunities to kill more Orcs on your way to the different locations.
I am not sure if higher level Orcs give more XP, but I always only hunt the strongest on my journies through Mordor. Many times I have let some time go by while on the towers to let the Orc society do their thing. You need to give them time to replace killed captains, so you have more to hunt. Also death threats raise the level of the Orc captains, so the fights are much more enjoyable and challenging.
I have played nearly 40 hours now and haven't left the first map yet. I have one more Warlord to kill, but I am still doing my death threats first, before I will continue with the main story.
BTW, the creatures give good XP. You can kill them with the bow pretty safely.

Question: Does your Orc society still work? And do they create more captains for you while waiting on the towers? (using the time shift option)

See if you can level up some Orc captains to level 20 and send a death threat also. I am sure you can gain more XP like that. Off course only if your Orc society still works, that is.

Also the free the slaves missions I think keep respawning, I have many times cleared them out and more little fist icons, representing slaves to save, would pop back up on minimap later on.

I'm pretty sure the Orc hierarchy still works but there's just no reason to try and kill them all any more. I mean, I already have all the warchiefs under my control so I could kill some and replace them with new ones and then kill them but what's the point?

I definitely didn't rush through the story mode, I've been playing for about 30 hours now and I rarely used the fast travel system, just running through killing everything on the way. I went out of my way to finish all the hunting and collecting challenges too so now my journal is fully completed and I can't get XP that way.

I got enough of the M currency to buy all of the attributes by the time I had finished the story and I thought I'd get XP at a parrallel rate so that they were both complete at about the same time but that just wasn't the case. I know how I can get the last few abilities, my problem is that there doesn't seem to be much point in spending hours grinding orcs just so that I can say I unlocked them all.

OK, so you have finished the game in 30 hours. Then I guess you will have to wait for more DLC stories to come up if there is nothing else to do anymore.
I recommend to take it a little slower next time. As I said, I am still on map one after 40 hours. So I have a lot more hours to come. I am guessing at least another 40 hours, if the second map is the same size and things to do.
Since they have the season pass available, I am sure there is more content coming. Or does anyone know more about that?

Like everyone else I'm sort of confused by your problem. Not only do Slave Missions respawn but I'm pretty sure that red Orc Missions do as well. One thing that will keep those red missions coming is to let youself gey killed a few times so new orc captains will come out. And don't forget to grab all the artifact and "glowing elf painting" pick ups. And also remember to sell off you're unused/duplicate/low level weapon runes; you can unlock a couple of skills doing that. I had every skill, upgrade and weapon upgrade unlocked by the time I was about 2/3's in.

Like I've said a few times, my problem is that there's no point grinding for hours just to get the new skills and have nothing to use them on but more grinding.

I could just kill orcs to get the XP but that would take hours. I could do the respawning quests but they're just grinding orcs too and only give a few extra XP (less than a tenth of what I need for a single ability). I already have all the artifacts and glowing elf painting pick ups so I can't use that as a source of XP, and selling runes is totally useless. They only give 5 M points which is basically worthless and won't help at all to get the abilities (the M points only count towards the attributes which as I said, I already have all of).

My point is that I specifically went out of my way to make the game last a long time, killing everything in my path and completing all of the optional quests and collectable missions before getting to the story end, yet there were still 6 of the abilities left to get and no interesting ways to get them.

If you find the combat interesting enough to waste hours just killing orcs for no reason then you will probably get them all, I just found it too similar the arkham games. I played all 3 arkham games, not to mention several assassin's creed games and the all have a similar combat style so I'm just kinda burnt out on it. If you enjoy it then I'm happy for you but I just find it too boring to do just for the sake of doing it.

I don't know what your going on about, I had all but 3 non-main mission abilities unlocked by the time I reached the second area.
If you can brand Uruks, have them murder each other, then infiltrate those missions. They drop ~400-600 XP for a minimum of effort (takes longer to get to the mission start point than doing the mission itself).
