Avoid strongholds until you've killed a few captains first and you won't have to worry about so many of them in once place.
And you can always retreat and try again later.
I could be wrong, but I think that I remember reading a tool tip in game that said that if you go to a Strong Hold to fight a Warlord, that he summons 4 Captains (approximately) to aid him in battle. Another site said it's supposed to be like fighting 4 bosses at once.

I think that I may need to take a break... It's no fun gaming when you've spent all day gaming, so much so that it physically hurt's to type.
Why can't they make Stealth togglable these days? Especially for Stealth orientated games.
A Warchief can have up to 5 bodyguards, indicated by a "line" going from the captain to the warchief. In addition to them its not unusual to have 3-5 Captains hanging out at the Warchiefs domain, after all... thats where stuff is going down.
Because Batman isn't supposed to sneak all the time. He is supposed to strut like a Badmofo around the place. Because he is Batman.
And since they didn't bother to use another engine for this game or make many alterations, so does our undead, wannabe Elf.
