Crashes after 10-20 minutes
I started playing this game about a week ago and it was fine at first. I played about an hour or so without any issues. I did have to turn down the graphics to their lowest settings, even though I have a pretty good computer. Later on though, it started crashing after 20 or even 10 minutes. The crash was it would freeze for a second, then the screen would go black, but the music would continue playing. Later I found that a fix for some people was updating their driver, which I did. Now I can barely play it for 5 minutes and then it will freeze and say "Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor has stopped working". Is there any known fix, or do I have to wait a patch?

Sounds like you might be over heating.

Reboot your pc, run the game, and check what your GPU temps are when running the game. If it is going above 90c after a few minutes (then crashing) I would clean out the inside of your pc with compressed air and leave the side of it open to allow more air flow when playing. That should drop your temps by 10-20 degress. Also, be sure your fans are working properly. You may want to set up a custom profile to make those things spin full speed when your card reaches a certain temp if you have not already.

I am not sure what else could cause that... I would say a bad install, but you said you were playing fine at first so that can't be it. It has to be heat.

@AnGhejit,

I would suggest the following two options (you can try them together)

1- When playing set steam to offline. I read it in the forums before and it worked for me, don't ask me why but it worked

2-Play in windowed mode and not full screen. before i knew of option one above I was crashing all the time as well. Even though i have a 780gtx and an i5-3570k overclocked at 4.6 (by the way the developers posted a thread about crashes and in that thread they said to remove overclocks on GPU among other things, look for that thread)

so before i knew of option 1, I played windowed. i also lowered the resultion to 1080p and everything from ultra to high. but after going offline, everything maxed out at 1080p and fullscreen (texters were always set to high never ultra)

Hope that works for you, let me know if it did. Good luck and have fun

Hi An Ghejt,
Sorry to hear about this issue. Are you still hitting the black screen crash? Or is the game just freezing for you?
One thing to try first is right click your game > properties > local files > verify integrity cache?
Let me know how this goes please, thank you.

This actually seems to work for me, can finally finish a mission after having the black screen bug 3 times in a row. But i've thought i've had fixed it too many times to get excited right away.

Thanks for your help!

I tried what WB_Juliet and Mello said, and neither worked. When I saw what the Blue Falcon said about GPU I thought maybe I should check the reccomended requirements of the game. And sure enough, my CPU doesn't even meet the minimum requirement:
Minimum: Intel Core i5-750 or AMD Phenom II X4 965
You Have: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3740QM CPU @ 2.70GHz
Plus my video card doesn't meet reccomended requirements.
Recommended: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7950
You Have: AMD Radeon HD 7970M
My PC was top of the line about a year ago. It's crazy how fast video games are evolving :P

Update: Of course when I try to get my game to crash to find my GPU, it actually lets me play an hour without problems. I won't be able to try again until Wednesday when I get back home to my computer. I'll try again and update this post on my situation then.
Also, when it crashed the past two times, the window saying "Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor has crashed" just pops up and the game freezes. No black screen, though.

Me too got crashes and even BSODs when playing it. But I've managed to resolve this issue by resetting my RAM overclock in BIOS. Since that I didn't had any crashes for two days.

@An Ghejit, I would recomend going desktop over a laptop. these laptop are way expensive and you can't upgrade the GPU. the 970gtx is out for $350 I think so you will be set for 2-3 years I think.

@ The Mighty Chihuahua, Glad I can help! I was so frustrated that the game kept crashing on me. Now it doesn't and I get to enjoy it. Have fun with the game.

If steam being in offline is a fix then that would point at vendetta missions being a likely culprit.

Well, it worked for 2 days, but now it's back.. So it's not really a fix.

The most annoying thing is that i've thought i've had it fixed 3 times.

first time: Turning v-sync off (worked for 2 days)
second time: Turning tessalation off, Worked for a day (2-3hours)
Third time: Offline mode (worked for 2 days)

The crashes are so random that i've decided to give up on this awesome game until they have patched it. I want to play when i want and not when the game allows me to play, LOL! :P

I tried playing it again, and now it works for a while (about an hour). This is what happens when it crashes: http://gyazo.com/54f5a888a5118fa5024a08aee4aa6aad
Also, there is a white screen instead of the game, and it just says that it has stopped working.

Do you have game loaded onto a ssd? Samsung evo in particular

@An Ghjet, I used to get the same message for my Nvidia Driver. It seems latley that many laptops can't cope with new games such as this one and dead rising 3. Even the desktops are suffering from similar issues.

Hopefully new drivers will be released to fix these issues. Good luck
