I had the same exact issues with it freezing. I'm running a 3770k with gtx 680's in SLI.
Solution 2 in this link worked perfectly.
Right click shadowofmordor.exe choose "troubleshoot compatibility".
Click "try recommended setting's then click "test the program"
Edit: On Windows 7, GTX 970, Nvidia 344.16 drivers, i5 2500K
Edit 2: It also happened on my R9 290 using 14.4 drivers, so it's not AMD/Nvidia specific.
I5 2500k, 16gb ram, MSI R9 290 4G, Win 7, latest drivers
SoM automatically validated the game files for some reason, then it re-downloaded 5GB of data. Ever since then, the game has been fine.
Verifying the integrity of the game cache might help some people.
Right click on Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor in your Steam library > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache
