42.1GB download size?
What the hell? Why is the download size for this game so massive? That is exactly the size it's going to take up on the disk! Why would you not compress that!? Dammit I've got a 250 GB data cap and that's with the only provider in the area! Jesus Jumpin' Christ! This is the first game on Steam I have ever come across where the download is entirely uncompressed. That is not right.

The game is compressed by Steam for downloading automatically just like all other games on Steam. However a large amount of the data for Mordor is compressed textures and video which are already compressed meaning you don't get much saving by compressing them a second time for downloading.

Some games use uncompressed data which means their download size is much smaller than their install size. In the case of Mordor it is just a really big game and the data has already been compressed as much as possible. The Mac version does have more savings compared to Linux as it has some uncompressed texture files in the data for performance reasons. However this also means the games installation size is bigger than the Linux or Windows versions.

Hope that helps explain things for you.

No, it really doesn't. There has to be something that can be done to reduce the download size further. It makes no sense whatsoever for the download size to be exactly the same as the size on disk. I actively cannot download the game because of this, because if I do then that combined with the rest of the household usage will put us over our 250GB data cap this month. I cannot believe that the game is so massive that 42.1 GB is the best that could be done.

Did you buy it from steam or from retail? Otherwise i whould say that you should download it from piratebay/kickasstorrent and then just add it to steam manually!

Yes, just infect my PC with awhole hell of a lot of malware just to be able to play a game that I already own. Totally a good idea.
Okay, new question. Is the DLC a part of that huge download size? Or does that download seperately? If it is a part of it, is there any way I can avoid downloading the DLC and just go for the base game until next month?
wow.... ignorant idiot here i hear, if you ask for help just show so appreciation!

Excuse me if my definition of help does not include directions to royally screw over a PC I have invested several hundred dollars in.

seems like you haven't used torrents before, or maybe you have. Maybe that's why you don't use it, cause you can't tell what is good and what is bad :P

I used to use The Pirate Bay, went only with torrents from Trusted users. Got nailed with bootkit. Never again. Now, do you know the answer to the other question I asked, or are you done here?
Seriously, there has to be some way of getting a smaller download size out of this! The minimum requirements only call for 25GB of free space!
The size is the size.

Take a portable HDD to a friend's house who doesn't have a ♥♥♥♥ ISP with a stupid cap and download it there, then transfer the files to your own computer if you have to. That's about your only option here.

That, or ask Steam for a refund if you just bought the game within the last 14 days.

It was a gift, and I still maintain there has to be a smaller download available somehow. Otherwise why wouldn't the minimum requirements for the game be updated?

The main game data is already compressed so it only gets a small benefit from compressing it again. You can test this yourself by taking a zip file and then zipping it a second time it does not get any smaller the second time.

For Linux the install and download sizes of the main game and HD textures are as follows:

Linux - Main Game
Installed Size 44.8 GB
Download Size 44.6 GB

Linux - HD Content
Installed Size 11.8 GB
Download Size 4.3 GB

As you can see the HD textures compress better however the main game doesn't benefit from this. I fully understand your frustration but apart from splitting the game into parts you can't make it smaller.

That figure is for the Windows version, I believe that figure is out of date/incorrect as the game appears to be ~45GB installed on Windows which is similar to the Linux minimum requirements. It's possible the page wasn't updated when the game was updated to the GOTY version.

Windows - Main Game
Installed Size 45.8 GB
Download Size 45.1 GB

Windows - HD Content
Installed Size 11.8 GB
Download Size 4.3 GB

EDIT: I'll investigate the minimum size for Windows on the store page and see if we can get that corrected, thanks for pointing it out.

The options have already been detailed for you.

There is no way for you to make the Steam download smaller.

I'm not even here for the Linux version but the Windows version. I furthermore contest that it was ever compressed at all. The size is so utterly ridiculous that it absolutely cannot be compressed in any significant fashion. There is no reason that any game whatsoever should be 40 GB or more.

GTA5 is over 60GBs... the Master Chief Collection on the Xbone is over 60GBs... your assertion is false. Games and their downloads have been growing lately, especially since the switch to Blu-Ray for both Microsoft and Sony's consoles.

The size is the size. You're going to have to deal with it.
