Excellent port. For a multiplatform game, the PC version runs flawlessly, and of course we get a high res texture pack that makes the game absolutely beautiful. It's had very few patches to fix bugs, if any. No game is without bugs but this game is as polished as a title I have seen on PC, and its a rare thing with such a huge franchise title
As a game that takes place in the Lord of the Rings universe, it has the feel of something that belongs in Tolkien's middle earth. That's a pretty rare thing for LOTR games in general, to be honest, most I have played have been crap, movie tie in or no. It also takes a step up from the movies and is quite a bit darker and more grown up, which is something I can appreciate too. Most fans love the rangers but really don't have much storyline in the books that goes into depth about who they are and what kind of lives they have so a story revolving around a ranger gives a new feel to a familiar franchise.
One of the biggest things I can appreciate about it is the dialog, aside from being excellently voice acted on all accounts, the orc dialog is the most impressive to me. I have killed dozens of captains and I have not heard a single repeated taunt or line, the variation is incredible, really. They can be creepy, vicious, intimidating, insulting, psychotic.. everything you would imagine orcs to be based on Tolkiens writing. I would say the orcs in this game have more life to them than the ones in the movies even
I started playing it yesterday and have around 9 hours in it already.
The port is great, I have a 560ti and playing on medium it rarerly drops beneath 50fps.
Combat is fun as ♥♥♥♥. I liked the Arkham games and considering combat is basically the same I'm having a blast. It's fluent and there are many ways to influence the outcome.
Saurons Army: I'm having a blast getting intel on the chiefs and then planning how I will get them down knowing their weakness.
Maybe it's just not your type of game and that's okay. Personally, I'm having a blast so far and don't mind one cent I paid for this game
i will admit, it is missing something, but its not boring.
alot of players compare it to arkham city, because of the stealth elements/open world.
"Nice graphics + Combat + optimized game does make a good game," thats debateable, any game can be reduced to its simplest elements this way. and MANY MANY games have proven to be exceptionally popular and successful with the very elements you describe.
That alone is reason enough if you like LotR.
Everything else I've come across (the MMO included) is mediocre at best, at worst total garbage.
For such a loved franchise, they really didn't make many good games. This game however almost redeems the people using that franchise. It runs flawlessly and is a lot of fun.
As I like to say, there are other games that are equally quick to get boring. However, I find myself getting back to Mordor every now and then justy because the combat is satisfying.
Even Assassin's Creed sucks by comparison and is WAY more boring (my own opinion of ocurse)
And the story isn't worse than the books themselves when you think about it. It's also much better than I had hoped for (again, mostly you get completely lazy tie in game with garbage story), so there is that.
Just my 2 cents.
The visuals are very appealing and while the world isn't that large it's still interesting enough to explore.
Lastly, just the store and the lore itself really was interesting and I felt compelled to follow Talion and his story.
The jadencat comment is a perfect example of all this hypocrysis as lack of licence/video games knowledge :
- the game is not a good port : there are fps drops and slow effects for no reason but technical issues
- graphisms are far from being good (poor light effects, music, sounds in general, textures are meh) for obvious optimization to please the widest audience possible, though the artistic direction is quite ok
- gameplay is almost an AC2 ripoff, Ubisoft were even willing to sue them
- story is freaking poor and barely related to TLOTR, uruks is not a Tolkien creation but a Peter Jackson's one to add "elite" orcs, like nowadays special ops for obviously please the american audience. The game totally lacks the ambiance of the books, it's quite inspired from the worst side of the movies instead : stupid orcs, unskilled dark agents (it required a significant amount of Gandalf the white's power to push Saroumane back from Rohan's king spirit, but a kiddo can do the same by mere breaking a staff, well well...) all mighty heroes, etc...
- press as youtubers (blatantly mostly composed of movies fans rather than books ones) good reviews were obviously pushed with gifts.
Now personally I like the mechanics, though there are many light flaws and the direction is ok, but it is repetitive indeed and quite superficial about the story.
Finally as stated above, for 5 € it's a good game for me, I'm definitely not dying of waiting for a sequel though.
I'm still waiting for a game inspired from the books rather than the movies, definitely not going to happen anytime soon.
its similair to assassins creed, or batman city, but its definitly missing something, that will keep it from being a classic.
its definitly not a 10/10, but its very impressive. it has some so-so elements, but overall, its a solid game.
it improves upon the arkham city style of combat. but i will admit, almost every time i play it i find myself thinking, "why arnt i just playing batman"
im not a huge LOTR fanboy, so i cant speak comparitively to the books( read them in my early teen years, decades ago), but if youre a fan of the movies, youre sure to get your moneys worth out of it, and kill a few evenings or a weekend on it.
i would definitly rather reccomend styx, dishonored, arkham city, MAYBE even assasins creed or farcry 4.
Although I apreciate all your answers, you all get one thing wrong.
No it is not my opinion. Pretty much any review says that the combat is repetitive and the story does got much to it.
Although I agree with all the rest, it is the best port in year (if ever), and it is the best polished game on PC since forever
metacritic has it as an 84/8.1 so clearly MOST people do review it positively.
i also am not sure about "the best polished" part, there are many pc games that would rival it in terms of beauty, performance, and scale. but its a Solid game. its no masterpiece, but its definitly not bad.
its a fun experience while it lasts.
if you only play for a couple hours you wont even unlock half of the abilities you gain throughout the game.
the runes add a layer of customization, to suit your playstyle, and the neat things you can do with branding/saurons army are really nice touches, fairly innovative.
like many open world games, it takes several hours for the abilities to even be available. so to say that theres no reason to play it after a few hours is simply wrong. you wouldnt have unlocked any rune slots on your weapons, branding, or even the second open world map area.
Yeah graphics are good, but the rest of this game ist just boring and repetitive, plus there werent any good characters, except Torvin who brought some humour in, but the main protagonist Talion is just boring and dislikeable as ♥♥♥♥
i didnt compare SOM to other games except lotr games, until theres a better midde earth themed game im keeping this 1 :)
