Now, I would still say its worth playing both in part because of the Nemesis forge! Your top nemesis, and your best ally are transferred over to Shadow of War at specific points in the story. Though once I start Shadow of War, I don't really feel inclined to go back to SOM, but both games are good and worth playing if you haven't played either before.
The only problem with Shadow of War is the grind, which was way worse at release. You could negate it with WeMod.
Id mention the source material adaptation accuracy, but why would someone who cares about lotr lore be on this thread, having not played it?
This was my take away after replaying Mordor and War recently. Even something like the lines the Captains say are better written and show way more variation in War. The fantasy of the nemesis system is just so much more potent as well as the broader power fantasy of building an army and waging huge sieges and defenses.
Mordor's cutscenes and story telling feel rushed and awkwardly paced in comparison as well.
2nd game, because its more of the same but better in pretty much every way. ive never beat this game, i was going to try to beat it now. But it feels harder to get into purely cuz the 2nd feels better in every way. Especially the fact this game sucks with keyboard and mouse lol. For some reason games AAA ones which makes it worse, dont bother to let you toggle mouse acceleration and or mouse smoothing.
This game is good though, as I said its just like a demo for the 2nd game lol. So it still is really good, writing is good.
if youve not played either, its fine to start with this one. The 2nd one is also harder, but thats cuz you can choose a difficulty lol.
Idk why games that go for pretty much normal difficulty dont let you choose a difficulty, idc if its lazy difficulty and just buffs health and damage, id rather have that cuz at least youll have to pay attention more.
If you play turn off the FX for when you block an attack, makes it more fun. Although not really much harder as enemies have good attack animations, so you know what you can block and have to dodge.
I also 100% shadow of war in 2021. It always felt challenging enough especially if you play dumb and cause enemies to gain levels lmao. Ive died before to the same guy several times to where he just became a god till I leveled up more. This game enemies only get to level 20, so its difficulty is capped pretty early.
