[SOLVED] Extremely High GPU Temperatures
As soon as the game loads into the main menu, the temperature on my GPU spikes from 33 C all the way up to 74 C and it stays like that the whole time. I have a feeling my graphics card should NOT be running this hot. Any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated.

NOTE: I have Vsync turned on so it's capped at 60fps. My computer tends to get ridiculously hot if the fps is too high without vsync turned on.

Specs:
GeForce GTX 980ti
Intel i5 6500
16gb Ram

dont use the hd textures AA things you dont really need? more your gpu utilizes the hotter she gonna get keep that vsync to definetly helps the temps drop certain things off like tensilation trust me you wont see any graphical diffrence you'll be to busy beating azz to worry about hair doos lol also hit google up and search "Geforce GTX 980Ti max safe temps" you might be surprised what these modern cards can safly handle but regardless im on amd R7 265 ive read its safe to 80c but on personal level i dont like seeing it hit 60c just how i am i suppose With it factory cooling i seen it hit 73c i replaced its cooler with artic twin turbo and since then havnt ever seen it go above 56c even on this game max settings 1080p no hd textures btw drop lod distance to medium you wont see no diffrence in game other than your temps dropping I doubt you need to see that big flappy t1t orc all the way to other side of the map right?

Hey man, thanks for the response. But how do I disable the HD textures pack?
TEKnowledgy 2016 年 5 月 8 日 下午 11:33
np dont have uninstall it just drop the texture setting back to high from ultra give it a test run btw updated my previous with some more tips on how drop utilizations without graphical degrading high graphics still looks pretty good i think few above tips might allow u to use hd textures tensilation pretty gpu needy theres another setting to that pretty needy just tinker with some them auxilary check box options you might beable disable them and still use hd with no overheating

Thanks for all the help man! I think I'll probably have to invest in some better cooling for my case. When idling (with 0% fans) it sits at about 48 C which apparently is much higher than what it's supposed to be. It's even exceeded 85 C on more graphics intensive games..pretty ridiculous. Also my liquid cooled cpu hit 80 C when I was playing Shadow of Mordor so I honestly don't know what the hell is up with my case...

might not be case might be thermal paste not enough or to much i recently had re educate myself on thermal pasting i built a new pc this past jan i hadnt built one since 2005 thermal pasting has changed alot in 10 years ya know applying it and all my first pc in 05 i built ground up was one them old amd athlons didnt have the silver diode caps back then thermal paste had to be aplied with a card and spread opaquly even with this new pc i used the pea size applying let the heat sink spread it while mounting the cooler never hurts to research and educate self on things no reason be ashamed on learning new things never know who you may teach one day on stuff. but it might be the case look into finding one with sht tones of fan ports I dont use water cooling but i use high cfm fans it moves out about 240 cubic feet of heat/air a minute out and in lol i need goto wwater one day but for now this doing fine i dont OC so dont need it to bad yet im on air entirly my room temp is always around 70-80 dgrees F and my pc has never went above 51c im on them hot azz 125w amd 8320fx series its oc'ed but not past it's turbo just like i turned turbo off and made it stay at turbo speed (4GHz) always so not passed factory end game clocks idls at around 25-30c this socket temps cores are bout same in both cases so honestly look at your thermal paste first it might just need another aplication you using artic silver right not that old white paste?

oh btw test this pull your case door off and keep little kids cats and dogs away from it and see what happens its a good work around thill you get things figured out last thing you wont is a toasted gpu that be just that much more money you gotta toss out if it does taking door off on one side will help a bit if still overheating got one them little desk fans give it some force induction to move that heat out
Furikagi 2016 年 5 月 9 日 上午 12:59
I'll give the door thing a try, this will help prove whether the problem is airflow or not. In terms of the thermal paste, I actually didn't build it myself. It's still a custom build but I had it built for me by the computer store.

might be the problem see think of it like the pc guy knows if it blows up you will come back to him he can't make money if it dont mess up not everyone in the world is honest. Educate yourself on how to thermal it and work on it its not hard just takes little reading youtube back in my day wasnt what it is now i read alot but now lotta vids on there show you everything you need to know save you lotsa money i built what i have for $722 after parts shipping was round $800 if someone done it for me been an easy $1500 i coukldnt afford that all i had to do was read and watch vids mainly had read parts reviews lol building it is easier than putting a model car together hardest part i think for this build was the cpu cooler it was a btch to install

For the record 74 degrees C is not actually hot for a graphics card. Mine can often run at around 80 depending on the game. Its only really an issue if it goes over 100 degrees C.

GPU's are designed to run hot, certainly much higher than a CPU. If your CPU starts running at 74 then you might have a problem, but 74 for a GPU isn't even high and is fairly normal for a grapichs intensive game.

Not really good advice, I would not do this. Opening the case completely screws with the airflow that a case is designed to produce.

If you are concerned with your pc running hot give the fans and vents a good clean out, you would not beleive what a layer of dust on a fan blade will do.
Furikagi 2016 年 5 月 9 日 下午 6:52
I know opening up the case is usually not recommended but it brought the temperature all the way down to 50 C (54 C at most) but I also changed the graphics settings like TEKnowledgy suggested, so either one or both of those solutions actually helped with the cooling. As for cleaning up the dust filter and inside the computer, how often should I be doing that? I've only had this PC for about a month.
TEKnowledgy 2016 年 5 月 9 日 下午 7:01
i ran my old pc for 2 years without a case door long as he dont allow forign stuff go into the case ita be fine its better then letting it overheat because it can cause more damage at temps like that then removing the door long as he is careful keeps people away kids dogs cats ita be fine ita buy him some time to get a case with fans or put water cooling on his gfx card My advoice is not perfect sure but his situation isn't perfect either. If you read one his above comments he says there is no airflow at all his case has no fans so he needs get that hot air out without fans only way to do that is to give it some by removing the door. Anyways people should read all of the comments before they stick there big headed observations into a subject just sayin....

Also any good tech person woulda told him to do same thing his overheating problem is definetly air flow so only 1 solution to that that is remove the door who ever told you not to don't know crap about airflow or troubleshooting hardware problems.

Depends how dusty your home is my home old very dusty i have fan filters but i still clean it least every 3 months. You might get away with once every 6 months just keep an eye on it and a can of compressed air make sure pc unplugged before you use compressed air as it will condence when cold air hits rooms warm air

Okay here's some things to note:
1. Owned the PC for 1 month so it's still brand new
2. My case is a Corsair Carbide Spec-03 Red
3. There are 3 fans installed on my case, 2 in front and 1 in the back.
4. CPU is liquid Cooled
5. From what I can see, the inside of the case is pretty spacey. I don't think anything is getting in the way of airflow

You said above fans was 0% why is that?
Even idle should never be 0%

Do you have any good hardware monitoring software maybe speed for fans to low? maybe just low cfm fans? something isnt right gotta get that heat out or it wont be brand new for long lol hope ya warenties are good still lol Personally i'd consider getting a water block for your gpu that solve this problem entirly
