Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor™

Enthralled by Nemesis System
I have not even bothered with the quests in Nurn yet, because of Nemesis; well, that and the tactical puzzles when facing ~6 named orcs! I've played electronic games for over 4 decades (yes, Pong...); I'm rather jaded and difficult to impress, but nemy is inspiring. See the quote below, for the basic design ideology.

Much like the generated orcs, the system has its own strengths and weaknesses. Strengths? It is quite an achievment to create a fresh gaming experience, not to mention successfully engaging. Most outstanding element? "Relatedness" in the form of grudges versus these little green turds... sometimes big green. Weaknesses? If a new player dies too much, their challenge increases and possibly hinders the "Competence" criteria, since orcs may get promoted beyond the player's frustration point. If a skilled/experienced player pushes the limits to improve and dies, the challenge decreases (all orcs purposely leveld to Legendary 20, but new orcs start decreasing in power), which impedes the "Autonomy" element. Although, we improve with repetition of easy tasks, we truly grow and become interested with reasonable challenge.

I can't wait to see Nemesis evolve in future products. All it really needs is adjustments to "Autonomy", which could be as simple as a few control settings for users (customization).

Designer Quote (Michael de Plater - Design Director):
One applied theory was the self-determination theory, which says human beings have three fundamental needs: Competence (they need to feel effective in dealing with environment); Autonomy (they need to control the course of their lives); Relatedness (they need to have relationships with others). Shadow of Mordor and the design of the Nemesis system sought to satisfy those three elements.

If Perhaps there was also a Nemesis Modding System that lets people upload more armour, weapon and even voice mods to a custom workshop then perhaps it would keep people interested, i'd personally love to see an Uruk who'll be wearing armour that's all on fire, not just the helmet.

Good point. I'm surprised WB is so anti-mod. Many players seem more interested in mods than the games themselves. I guess that speaks to the "Autonomy" design element.
