When should I play DLC?

Bought this game during the Summer Sale . Have played about twelve hours...says I'm 27% complete. I've killed the four warchiefs and about to start the main mission called The Black Captain.

Should I be playing any of the DLC (like Bright Lord) now or wait until I beat the main story? It's kind of confusing how you launch them separately, so wasn't sure how character progression worked with them.

The DLCs are separate campaigns. Lord of the Hunt is after the Main Quest, The Bright Lord is in the past as Celebrimbor. Play the main campaign, then you play the DLCs since they add more mechanics on top of the ones you learn throughout the game and The Bright Lord up the difficulty a little bit, with a nerf to your character, though you get some powerful new abilities to compensate, and stronger Captains and Warchiefs.

Yeah, best way to go is Main Story, then do the DLC in any order you want, as one prequals and the other sequals, so theres no real worrie about the order you do it in.
