1) Charge the BOW with the 8 hits, not the sword. This means 8 consecutive hits with the BOW (not the sword). If I swapped back to my sword (By releasing the right mouse button), the counter would be reset. If you have the skill which charges on 5 hits, then you'll only need 5 hits.
1a) because the focus fire takes so long, I tended to only use quick shots to charge the bow. I found that if I used charged shots I would get overwhelmed by enemies before I managed to fire the 8 (or 5) shots.
1b) I found that if I got hit by anything, this would reset my counter (as it does with the sword).
1c) Because you need 8 (or 5) shots to charge the bow for fire arrows, you need to have a big arrow magazine, so you'll need to have upgraded you arrows to hold at least 10 arrows (8 arrow magazine if you only need to charge with 5 arrows)
2) ONc ethe bow is charged, whihc is indicated by the hit count turning red, while remaining in bow mode with the right mouse button, hit the L-crtl button. Do not press the left mouse button as you normally would. This will fire the fire arrow. Just touch the L-ctrl button, you don't need to long-press it.
There is a quest which involves shooting 5 orcs with fire arrows. Having just played that quest, I would recommend that you max out your arrow magazine and get the skill which allows you to charge with 5 hits. Too frustrating otherwise.
