yeah thats all i know and i know the wraith is the creator of the rings right? anyway after i posted that i googled to see if anyone else asked and apparently "the less of lotR movies you watch the less you will be annoyed on how much lore they trample over"

I watched every movie, read every book and I find this game to be a lot of fun. Only ♥♥♥♥♥♥' neckbeards will be pissed off over something so trivial

It doesn't directly follow the LOTR storyline / universe so not really, though that is not to say you should not watch the LOTR trilogy, consider giving the books a try also.

There is one fairly important character that is in this game that is in the movies, though it is not a big part. But I think it might kinda spoil some of the movies in a way. Not story, but feel when watching the movies for the first time will deffinitly be affected by playing the game. But it is also the other way around, if you watch the movies you recognize certain things. As the style and look of the game is deffinitly based on the movie franchise. I don't think you need to watch the movies to get understand the story or anything like that, but I would deffinitly recommend watching them. Especially the extended editions. Some of the best films ever made imo.

you dont have to watch the movies, this is actually sort of a noncanon(?) sequel to the original series (a dev said), it has a few characters from teh movies and books but it gives you their story in game.

i never even considered it non canon, so used to games like the walking dead that are confirmed by devs and the original creator of the property to be saying its canon

You can play without watching the films / read the books, but you'll be completely lost / won't understand the lore and backstory.
