the reason you sacrficed yourself was to save goal and deponia.
it was a wast of presus time just siting there.
cletus was not that much worse then you he changed his mind and did not want to destroy depoina. yah he was a ♥♥♥♥ but so are you(in the game i have no idea what your like in real life)
the reson why you deserve goal is the very same reason you cant have her
there was no choices in any of the games and each ended with a false choice so its no difrent then one or 2.
in 1 they act like you can lie to goal and go to elysum by not telling the truth and thus geting everything you want but you cant make that choice.
in 2 you can once again lie to goal if you want to get everything you want and win but you cant
and in 3 once again its up to a situation with goal and weather you lie or tell the truth and once again you tell the truth but ther is still no choice in how and you must alow yourself to fall to show her the truth. all these endings are almost exactly the same
the point of the game is to point out the flaw in thinking you should get the girl just becuse you were able to combine two items.
your goal should be for the betterment of the world not the betterment of yourself
bishock has gotten alot of hate for it to but is probubly the only exception to being completly hated
i dont think you have played Shadow of Colossus.
the ending is completly diffrent
they spend the hole game trying to save thier gf only to creat an evil that could distroy the world. you then have to scrfice not your life but who you are to save the world. you are then turnd into a baby wiping the darkness from your sol you created. you are left with horns
you grow up to be the chricter in ico
there has been almost no games that killed the MC and stuck to it in the last 5 years
compare that to the 500 games where you "win"
but yet becuse yo think there might be one other game with a simler ending that means its equaly as orginal?
By the way there is confirmation that Ruffus is not dead by the German voice actor of Ruffus himself, however he states that Ruffus has left the building. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=744552455556564&set=vb.200756696602812&type=2&theater
After replaying the end 15 minutes or so of the game again I've come to also realise that Ruffus probably made the decision so that Goal herself didn't have to. He couldn't let her live with the guilt of sacrificing the other two to save him. He also wouldn't let the destruction of Deponia hang on the balance of Goal not wanting to let any of them die. Looking at it like that he is the true personification of what being a hero means. In the end I'm happy in believing he truly did change, but his change was for himself and probably due to meeting goal throughout the series. Maybe it's too poetic as well but I like to think it was his love for Goal that ultimately changed him for the better.
was also just wondering if anyone knows what collecting all the eggs.etc unlocks
Thanks, I enjoyed reading your post and the rest in this thread. Ironically throughout the Deponia series I felt myself thinking more cynically, sarcastically and egotistically alongside Rufus (as you yourself fall into character - even if just a tad) and at the end I was thinking to myself how ironic to think that he changes into a better person whilst in some respects the player themselves revert down to Rufus' level by controlling Rufus' character throughout the story as a whole and often associating with his humor xD
Do not worry my friend, every Deponia fan feels like a brother to me. Whether some of us enjoyed it, whether some of us hated it, or maybe some of us felt fairly neutral about it; we all share the games precious and special moments with each other. It was a fantastic trilogy and though the end left me distraught, there are so many things that I still love about the entire series and it's world as a whole. The story MUST be acknowledged. It was an honour reading all of the comments here and throughout the other threads too, since we as the player are now the ones who carry the torch for Rufus' memory. We as the player become his immortality. Rufus will survive through our own voices and I know that I will never forget the journey. The art was so full of life all the way through the game and the voices and music alongside carried it towards it's success.
A masterpiece doesn't have to be perfect. :)
On a final note a couple of beautiful Deponia related images

At first I chose the dialogue choices that were most heroic i.e. sacrificing yourself, and as soon the final cutscene started playing I though "♥♥♥♥, I forgot to save right beforehand."
Since I hadn't tried all the other options first I thought that there were multiple endings based on your choices at the end. I looked to see if there were any videos still locked and realized that that was it and at first it hit me pretty hard.
At first I felt ♥♥♥♥♥♥, I didn't think the ending was bad but I was hoping it would have gone differently. It was obvious that Goal knew that it was Rufus who feel so I took solace in that.
I immediately came to the discussions looking for a discussion thread like this and reading your guys's analysis of it definitely put my mind at ease. I loved this whole series and was not expecting to get such a hit in the feels from a point and click adventure game, but I guess that is a sign that it was really good.
I bought the new collection and am definitely going to play through it all again soon.
Yes, well it wasn't what any of us expected.
But then, would it have been better if it had been what we expected?
And really, what did we expect?
A happy end? Would't that have felt shallow?
A for Cletus getting the girl, that was part of the ending i didn't understand.
It seemed to me that Cletus kind of explored the part of him which made Rufus Rufus because he was given the opportunity for creativity.
Still, I wonder if Goal would look for Rufus (or vice versa) now that it is known that he's not dead.
