You can use feeders to increase the amount of food you can store so you don't need to feed them as often. You will still need the resources, though.
Regarding feeders. I have tested them in my game and see no appreciable benefit.
My experience with the feeders has been very different than what you describe.
If you check how often they need fed.. if they need fed more often than they can be harvested.. for example if they need fed every 5 hours but can only be harvested every 6 hours.. the feeder allows you to feed enough once, for them to be ready in the morning.. if you don't use the feeder then they run out of food in 5 hours (and can't be harvested if they've run out of food before they are harvested).
The feeders were confusing to begin with.. but after looking (in the shop) to see how often they need fed, it was pretty easy to figure out.
The same holds true with the ducks.. some of them need a feeder.
Garlic, Lentil and Chickpeas is food for sheep, if I'm remembering correctly.
