Perhaps @WaaghMan can enlighten us on the matter?
If I understand it correctly, mostly, saves and progress upon full release/major update resetting occurs in Alpha and other very early development because there are major changes to the way the game works that is not compatible with how it worked previously, causing errors, crashes, and other game breaking bugs. These devs seem to work things in while making them to prepare for future updates and implementations in a way that everything usually doesn't crash when implementing something new, or at least don't mind so much going in to straighten everything out afterwards. Another thing I love about them. It doesn't necessarily make other devs bad, but it does make these ones great! ^_^ <3
