Very much a love letter to survival horror and Resident evil, very fun so far

A little lacklustre survival horror game that honours what inspired it, but fails to deliver on its promising premise.
As a spiritual successor to the classic horror titles of the past, it hits the mark with beautifully moonlit light sourcing art style and uncanny ambiance, but falls short in recreating the tense atmosphere and jump scares that made those games so terrifying. The game's narrative, which attempts to explore themes of isolation and paranoia, feels disjointed and poorly paced. The protagonist in these games shoulders much of the burden in engaging the player, but Alicia is decidedly a little flat. Other characters are more caricature, but that is forgivable given the nature of the genre.
The gameplay is serviceable with a nice option between "new" FP view and fixed-camera clunky controls. The game does rely too heavily on cheap jump scares and loud noises, rather than building a sense of tension and dread through clever level design and sound work. I found this to be an easier title than most survival horror games given the relaxed resource management system, which allows you to breeze through the game without really feeling truly threatened.
I do like it, but then I love this type of game and what it intends buys a great deal of emotional leeway with me. It is different enough to be worth a play, but your mileage may differ. Overall, it is a slow recommendation particularly to fans of the older RE and SH titles as a homage rather than any sense of continued innovation. I would put it on par with the PS1 Koudelka or Obscure titles that echo the origin of the genre - not bad at all, but a missed opportunity that makes the game worthwhile on a sale, but failing to live up to the much higher standards set by its horror game predecessors.
